i hope to be getting xbox live soon but i dont know what connection type would be the best. and do i have to buy an xbox live starter kit

Yes, if you want to talk you have to buy the Starter Kit. Most games though come with the 2 month free subscription for people to try out.
As for connections, it would be best if you had a nice and fast cable connection, but DSL works as well. In case you didn' t know, 56k is not an option for Xbox Live...broadband only.
