UMD movies going for 28 bucks! Geez!!!
-
Feb 17, 2005 09:06
http://psp.ign.com/articles/588/588365p1.aspx February 16, 2005 - Add director Zhang Yimou' s slick action fantasy The House of Flying Daggers to the PSP' s initial line-up of UMD films: Sony announced today that the movie will be released for the new handheld on April 19 -- simultaneously with the film' s DVD release. Daggers, which will sell on UMD for a suggested $28.95, jumps to the PSP format along with previously-announced films like Hellboy, XXX, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Sony expects a mix of day-and-date releases as well as catalog releases, which generally be priced at $19.99. UMD movies play back at a full 16:9 aspect ratio. Sony promises that the AVD compression scheme offers quality similar to what consumers expect from DVDs. Granted some of Sony' s owned movies are going for 20 bucks, but that' s still a lot for a movie that only works on your PSP. Especially when you consider you can just buy a 512MB memory stick and download a movie to it thus not having to buy a UMD ever. Or just buy the full DVD version..... Add to that games run between 40-50 bucks, and the PSP could potentially turn into one pricey investment in the future.

Sure doesn' t look like Sony has thought this out...how do they plan to make an $$, if their product costs too much $$ for those of us on limited budgets? Sounds like Sony will be shooting themselves in the foot...or at least they need to get their heads checked! Another reason not to buy the PSP...(at least for me, that is)
Videogaming is the contemporary interactive pasttime.

The PSP is a premium priced product and hence the people who will buy it will tend not to be on limited budgets. In other words they can afford to pay $30 for a UMD movie and $50 per game. For the time being the PSP is not being aimed at the mainstream.

still, 30 bucks for a movie. That' s just poor thinking. Nobody wants to pay 30 bucks for a movie that they' ll only be able to watch on a 3 inch screen with stereo sound. Not when the DVD is DTS EX 6.1 and runs on your hi-def 60 inch TV.

LOL, no one at Gamefaq' s PSP board seemed to believe me when I said the movies would cost around $30, so this is just too funny to me. I told the bastids PSP games would be priced similarly to PS2 games and UMD movies would cost $30. But I think I' ll behave myself and just watch them all fall over themselves with their usual bytching about everything, lol...

Paying more money for a lesser product is what it' s all about! $20 or less for a full resolution movie playable in progressive scan wide-screen with Dolby Digital 5.1 and/or DTS 5.1 sound and lots of extras? SCREW THAT! $30 for a low-resolution movie playable only on a portable game system? HELL YEAH! SIGN ME UP NOW! Apparently Sony thinks that only morons will buy the PSP. If these movies actually sell, then it will be proven true.

Hey Joe, I' m looking to trade in my commodore 64 for a new computer if you' re interested? It' s got a paltry 64K of physical memory and can handle a measly 16 colors on screen at once! Whaddya say? We gotta deal!?!?

I' d buy my favourite film of all time (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) if it was released. Other than that though, I can' t see myelf buying any movies on UMD.
