Tecmo turns down Square, looks to Koei

From Edge Online, Tecmo has apparently declined Square Enix's takeover offer and is in the midst of negotiating a merger with bland-yet-venerable industry stalwart Koei.  Koei has had a solid, if unspectacular, business model built on console strategy games dating back to the 8-bit era, spiced up with a recent attempt at the action/racing market.  A merger with Tecmo could nicely diversify both companies' catalogs.

Whatever logic there is behind Tecmo's desicion, to choose Koei over Square (Final-Fucking Fantasy???) it just smells like stupidity to me.

I think the main logic behind it is that they want to keep their jobs.  If they are swallowed up by Square-Enix there would be no use for any of the executives or higher-ups and their creative freedom would most likely be stifled while their lead designers and programmers are assigned the menial task of porting Final Fantasy: The Iteration To End All Iterations XXII to mobile phones.

Considering that Square acquired Taito a while back and Taito still does its own thing, I am pretty sure Square would acquire Tecmo, but let them do their thing, kind of like a first party developer or so.

Tecmo lost its only useful product when they lost Itigaki and Team Ninja. Who cares who buys them at this point?
