Best movies that take advantage of BluRay?
-
Jun 05, 2008 04:45
Now that I have a PS3 sitting in my room just kinda collecting dust until MGS4 comes out I was wondering what good movies there are on BluRay that really take advantage of the tech. Seems like a large portion of their library are old movies that weren' t captured in HD and were just upscaled. What are some good movies that you guys have that are true HD that are pretty good. I got a $100 gift card with my console so after I get MGS4 I still have money left over to blow.

3:10 to Yuma Planet Earth Live Free or Die Hard Casino Royale 300 Pan' s Labyrinth The last two rocked my socks. But seriously, Ratchet and Uncharted don' t interest you? You could pick up one of those, and a Blu-Ray title and still come out ahead.

ORIGINAL: Vx Chemical I just got the pirates trilogy, excellent series for HD. Also, go get uncharted! its Ace I am a Pirates fan. Maybe I will grab that. How long was Uncharted. That is the only title I' m remotely thinking of getting. I' ve heard 6 hours and I just can' t justify paying $60 for a 6 hour title. I just downloaded the demo so I' ll be trying it out when I get off work. Eddie, sadly I have just about every title besides Pan' s Labyrinth and Planet Earth I have on DVD and really don' t feel like buying again. I almost picked up There Will Be Blood (f*cking awesome movie! currently am renting on the XBL marketplace though) on BluRay today. I wanted Rambo but they didn' t have it in stock.

Uh... non-digital movies are still shot in resolutions higher than HD. It' s just that many early Blu-Ray movies were encoded with shitty codecs (MPEG2) because it was cheaper than using the superior VC-1. The other problem has been companies like Warner authoring from old HD masters in 1080i and then deinterlacing. Wouldn' t normally be a problem, but they had filters applied to reduce artifacts and aliasing on 1080i TV' s (before 1080p was standard) and you end up losing detail when you then deinterlace to 1080p. As far as i' m concerned the best Blu-Rays movies in terms of image quality are: Amazing A Scanner Darkly Pirates trilogy I Am Legend Black Snake Moan Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within I, Robot Mission: Impossible III Blade Runner Ocean' s Eleven The Day After Tomorrow Enemy of the State The Fifth Element Ice Age Man on Fire The Departed Gattaca Great 300 Casino Royale Apocalypto Silent Hill Pearl Harbor Training Day Swordfish Terminator Terminator 2: Judgment Day Lord of War S.W.A.T. Underworld Sunshine Dogma Black Hawk Down Basic Instinct Mr. & Mrs. Smith The Usual Suspects

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete needs to freaking come out. That' s probably the main movie I want. I should go and get Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (favorite movie of all time). Is Terminator on BluRay though? I thought that was on HD-DVD and T3 was on BluRay.

What do you mean by " weren' t captured in HD, simply upscaled" ? Anyway as far as video goes, Pirates 1 is good (the other two aren' t even worth sitting though). So is Rambo (4) and Ratatoullie or however it is spelled. For sound, nothing beats Flight of the Phoenix in DTS. Rambo (4) is also good for sound. As for extras, well... who cares? Terminator 1 and 2 are on Blu-ray, but they don' t truly impress mainly because of the crappy transfer and MPEG2 codec. They still look noticeably better than the DVDs, though. Go to www.blu-ray.com and search for movies. You' ll find out if they exist on BD and you can read user reviews about their picture and sound quality, etc.

ORIGINAL: Joe Redifer What do you mean by " weren' t captured in HD, simply upscaled" ? I thought unless stuff was digitally captured in HD the original source material was just upscaled/converted to 1080p. Is this incorrect?

ORIGINAL: Agent Ghost Film is shot in a higher resolution than 1080p. Not all the time. That' s right, some recent movies like the latest Star Wars episodes were shot in 1080p (and cropped to a 2:40:1 aspect ratio). That' s why they aren' t very sharp on the big screen. But anything shot on film has a higher native " resolution" than 1080p, by far. A lot of people mindlessly think that " digital = better" but that is not the case. Many transfers are just bad, but that' s not the fault of film as a medium.

Definitely visit the blu-ray.com link I provided above to see how users rated the pic and sound quality. The sound quality on older movies will usually be worse unless it originally had a 70mm release. The reason is because there wasn' t much in the way of digital sound back then and most movies were mastered in Pro-Logic. When digital sound came about, most studios really upgraded their recording and mixing equipment.

Nitro are you talking about the ' New' 25th aniversary directors cut all singing all dancing version of Blade Runner? If the quality is out of this world in Blu Ray then i will buy it again, (i already got it on in SD prior to getting PS3.)

I was on this subject until somebody constructively corrected me.
