An interesting editorial on the significant lack of color in today' s games.

I mostly agree with the article, i start having this same idea not so long ago, and the game that really pushed my buttons is Dark sector. it' s all brown in the day / and dark blue in the night , colors are so scarce. it' s almost like all games use the same techniques as metal gear.

Metal gear 1: Blue

Metal gear 2: brown/yellow

Metal gear 3: Green

Metal gear 4; Grey

Graw 1&2 brown

Gears of war , brown or dark blue

Dark sector. Grey/ brown / blue depending on the time of the day

assassins creed : depending on the city the color palette changes drasticaly

Blue / brown / grey

Need for speed most wanted ; Brown

Bioshock. Blue

Fear. grey

Condemned. grey/brown

Lost odyssey . different filter depending on the place, always a color is dominant, a yellow city (one exemple the color of the sky looks eaxacly like the walls in UHRA )) a light blue city , a dark blue city ...

Kameo , the darkness (however in the hell part everything is brown... ), The orange Box, Stranglehold, virtua fighter, eternal sonata.

Ive not read that but know its mainly due technological advancements and the empathsis of creating games to look more and more realistic or based on real life.

in real life we have a shit lload of colors , and our walls and pipes don' t look like the colors of the sky or the earth.

I was seconds away from posting a thread ealier called what happened to bright and colorful! im sure you can guess what it would have been about!

Thats why i play Viva Pinata once in a while .. A massive change from the normal grays and blues ..

Monolith should have made No one lives forever 3, instead of the fear sequel!

Killzone 2 and GOW2 seem to also be going down the same path but at least we got LBP n Banjo to bring some colour into our lives

I never said the platformers had to be outstanding or good for that matter!
People just have to play more platformers in order to enjoy the use of more color palettes in games .

Nor did you say they had to be anywhere within the last 5 years. Want color? Try Lomax the Lemming on PS1. Or maybe Gunstar Heroes and Castle of Illusion on the Mega Drive/Genesis (which in itself is a feat because the Genesis is not known for large amounts of good color). Top Hunter on the Neo Geo looks pretty. So does the first few stages on Magician Lord.

For a recent platformer with eye-bursting color, simply pop in Super Mario galaxy on the Wii.

Castle of Illusion was indeed very colorful. Another more recent game with color that I came to think of that isn' t a platformer was Zelda : The Windwaker.

Okami. One of the best and most colorful games ever. Final Fantasy games are pretty colorful too, even Final Fantasy VII, which is the darkest of em all.

I just played Uncharted today... that game is so pretty. The screens absolutely don' t do it justice, especially the color palette.

The same reason comics for adults are pretty much all drawn in dark shades, they' re supposed to have that gritty atmosphere.

I don' t miss colorful games.
