Confirmed: Warner Going 100% Blu-ray
-
Jan 05, 2008 07:41
Source t' s been speculated upon and speculated upon, but today it happened: Warner Bros. declared undying allegiance to one format alone: Blu-ray. " The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger," said Warner chairman Barry Meyer, suggesting that this move will end the format war. We are a bit sad about this, given our current love of Warner' s HD DVDs over their identical Blu-ray titles. And there' s still a lot of momentum on the HD DVD side, with Paramount, DreamWorks and Universal exclusivity. But this is a massive blow for sure.

The " battle" between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is perhaps the biggest technological non-event going right now. Consumers just don' t give a damn about these formats.

What are you talking about? AVI, Xvid, and MP4 for the win! In all honesty though, I' m glad I shipped Blu-Ray from the get-go. It' s going to make it so much better when they wipe the floor with HD-DVD. Sorry, I' m not a fan of too many organized sports, I' ve got to get competitive over something!

If you have HD programming and a DVR both formats are kind of unneeded, I watch 95% of my HD on my HD DVR. Really anything that I could want to rent is always running on starz/hbo/etc anyway and I can just save it all to DVR and delete when Im done.

LOL Hd dvd is doomed... anyway I perfer bluray to ' win' ... as I already have a bluray player and I perfer the blue box rather to the dark red of hddvd.

ORIGINAL: Eddie_the_Hated Nobody' s broadcasting 1080p yet are they? It doesn' t make enough of a difference. 1080i moves off starz look about as good as any bluray movie. The only reason I have a bluray player is because ps3 includes one.

New Line Cinema followed Warner' s lead aswell.. :) Tough, for those that own HD-DVD players, you' ll still be able to get new movies from Warner (and New Line I assume), even after this. It' s just that they' re new releases will be put out first on Bluray and DVD, while the HD-DVD version gets put out later, I read somewhere.

1080i moves off starz look about as good as any bluray movie. LOL! Not at those bitrates! Over the air HD broadcasts are bad enough, but the bitrates on cable are even worse! I guess if you like MPEG artifacts when things start moving fast or there is too much difference between frames or if you like movies that don' t have much motion, then it would be OK. Plus those broadcasts are usually limited to 256kbps Dolby Digital 5.1 at MAX! That' s a lower bitrate than most DVDs. Pathetic! Most Blu-Ray discs offer 5.1 uncompressed audio or DTS HD Master (lossless) or Dolby Tru HD (also lossless) sound in up to 7.1 discrete channels. None of that matrixing nonsense on the back surrounds. I hope you' re not too poor to afford Blu-Ray movies.
