2008 Predictions

So let me get my predictions down... You can quote me on this later on in the year.. but I' ll only be doing that to put it in your face becuase I am/was right about everything.

- Mgs4 hits Q2 [Japan first, Us and Eu a week or so after] will sell over One million in the first few days, will shift lots of ps3' s. Remains exculsive for the time being.

- Wii continues to sell well but starts to drop into the summer as titles like mgs4,gta4 etc. become more popular.

Will update later on when I' m thinking better.

Change is inevitable. Except from a vending machine.

Viva La Revolution! erm, I mean Viva La Wii!

Cars will be able to fly and robots will mine mars.

The Playstation brand will make a more aggressive advertising push to coincide with their spike in console sales. They' re going to make sure that they butt-heads with major Microsoft and Nintendo releases down to the date.

I expect to see some regime changes within Microsoft' s Xbox division. A handful of big people are going to move on, with (possibly) more competent people getting bumped up in the company.

If there' s going to be that rumored media-hub with 360 capabilities (which I somewhat doubt), Microsoft is going to push the media-hub component of it' s functionality, instead of referring to it as an expanded Xbox product.

If an Xbox handheld is somewhere in the works, I can see them taking the multimedia device route for it, using digital distribution as a viable option for an inevitable microsoft-point based movie service, similar to that of the 360' s, if not the games themselves. Definitely hard-drive equipped, and a " higher-tech" " classier" alternative to the PSP. Don' t expect anything touch or cartridge related beyond a possible memory-card slot.

Nintendo will finally get a workable multiplayer service up and running, sans any sort of microphone support to appeal to the child-conscientious parents. I expect to see decent performance in terms of a utilitarian barebones multiplayer service, but a significant lack of now-industry-standard features, and less support from Nintendo that we' ve been seeing from the Live and PSN teams.

Atari will finally close it' s doors after getting de-listed from the NYSE, and a handful of ditch-attempt failures from the weak franchises they still have left.

Interplay will resurface, and show off a mediocre mmo based on the fallout franchise, they will turn the key again before new years eve though.

Blizzard will announce Diablo 3, release Starcraft 2, and ofcourse return of the lich king.

Wii sales will sore for awhile untill everyone has one, they dont break often so people wont buy new ones.

Bioware will reveal their joint Lucas Arts project, Mass Effect 2, Jade Empire 2, and Dragon Age (here of dragon age is the most promising)

Dreamcast games will be availeble to download on the Xbox 360.

PS2 games will be availeble for download on the PS3

Bethesda won' t be the ones really showing off the new Elder Scrolls game. They are more focused on Fallout. However there will most likely be news of the new game in the series but from a different development team and the game will be taken in a new direction... this really isn' t a prediction though.

Ew... new dev teams and a " change in direction" . I' ve yet to see a game but Resident Evil 4 that could pull off one of the two there (the latter of course).

Well, Mario Galaxy was headed by a new development team (well, their only experience was the DK bongo games) and you see how that' s turned out for everyone.

I believe that Nintendo will announce the Wii 2 at some point this year, beating MS and Sony to the punch in announcing their next console.

After the announcement of the 360 Ultimate at CES, MS will also announce yet another 360 sku; the 360 slim just to completely confuse consumers as to what 360 they should get.

And finally, and most importantly in my mind, the PS3 will come out of 2008 as the best console of that year. It took the 360 pretty much the same amount of time to take off as it will Sony. With the line-up they have coming to us in 2008 I just can' t see the 360 or the Wii beating them out.

Oh, and we will see a few games shown off at E3 which are coming out on the next-gen consoles. Elder Scrolls 5 would probably be a good guess as being one of those games.

I don' t like making predictions, but I say that PS3 is gonna pick up even more steam than it already has, while Microsoft will either remain the same or slow down. Nintendo' s momentum is going to depend on wether or nor they can deal with their manufacturing problems.

My predictions:

1-Shenmue Online will be officially canceled for PC.

2-SEGA might sign a deal with Microsoft to release Saturn & Dreamcast HITS on
Xbox LIVE via a new service like " XEGA LIVE" or " X-EGA LIVE" .

3-Microsoft will announce(and launch) a new HOME-like service for Xbox 360
and perhaps they' ll call it " Xbox LIVE LIFE" .

4-Gears 2 will be announced exclusively for Xbox 360.

5-No Resident Evil 5 for 2008(I hope this doesn' t happen)

6-More from God Of War III will be revealed.

7-Shenmue II will be available on Xbox LIVE Originals for download.

8-A new Jet Set Radio will be announced!(perhaps for Wii)
but no Street Of Rage 4!

7-Let' s dream: SEGA will announce " Shenmue Saga:The Green Box" .

8-No MGS 4 360!

9-Yakuza III aka Ryu Ga Gotoku:Kenzan! will become a KILLER IP for PS3.

-Super Smash Bros Brawl Will be the Most Polished Game of 2008, No doubt about that. (I would of Predicted GOTY 2008 but it' s gonna be released too early, will get lost int the hype of the fall releases and is more of a HC title, Soo...)

-Resident Evil 5 Will be GOTY 2008 (this All depends what Genius Nintendo Comes up with late 2008)

The Next Xbox announcement/rumor is a great call. It' s coming very quickly and already has developers working on titles for it. I expect a late 2009/early 2010 release.

At the end of the year, the HD DVD group calls it quits. Universal and Toshiba fold to Blu.

EA makes another big time acquisition of either a prominent developer or publisher.

Wii loses momentum

This time last year nobody outside of Nintendo could have had any idea as to how successful the console was going to be. Not even the hardest of hardcore Nintendo fanboys thought Wii would take the world by storm, and those that say they did are full of shit.

Wii has done far better than i had expected, but i still can' t see it lasting. Nintendo' s hardcore games (Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3) have done fine, but they haven' t performed as well has expected which i think has probably got something to do with the Wii demographic being substantially different to Gamecubes.

I can see Wii selling well throughout the year, but i think it' s going to lose a lot of momentum as we approach the summer months. Nintendo will likely take 2008, but i expect Wii to be on it' s last legs early in 2009.

Take 2 iPod Touch' s, tape them together and add the ability to play DS games...

Gears 2 released in November " exclusively" for Xbox 360

Microsoft need it to be ready and they need it to be 360 only. Sony have the unannounced Resistance 2 (possibly 2009) and Killzone 2 on the way and Microsoft have... Halo Wars

Gears 2 is a no brainer, as is it' s " exclusive" -ness. Like the first game it' ll be ported to PC, but not for at least 12 months.

Wii loses momentum

There are probably quite a few people working on the next Xbox. There' s no doubt about that, but it' s not because there' s a console announcement around the corner. People were getting jumpy before CES because they were expecting massive revelations and uncovering of new consoles....

I didn' t buy it for a minute, and guess what... no news.

Apple has got nothing in store in regards to games. Nothing! I think it was in an interview with some of the people from Valve, they said they couldn' t believe how much of a complete absence of thought there is at Apple regarding games. No one there is working on anything games-related, no one there is even thinking about games.

Good thing I am not big into PC playing, because Apple does suck big time in the game department. If they wanted to sell more machines and become more mainstream, gaming would be a good business to tackle. To each their own I guess.

I think it' s only a matter of time before Apple takes the gaming market seriously.

On the one hand, there' s no such thing as too much competition in the games industry. It keeps prices competitive and console designers putting features in that the users want.

From the other perspective (the poor one), it' s one more console to have some potentially fantastic exclusives on, and one more to have to buy!

It' d be odd for sure. We' ve had a 2-3 console market for quite a while, so it' d be interesting to see how it played out.

I do believe that Nintendo will announce the Wii 2 sometime this year, because they know that the Wii will not keep up the pace it is on. As Majik pointed out, the Wii will lose most of its steam by the beginning of 2009 so it is not out of the realm of possibility that they will announce the Wii 2 this year so that they do have a head start over MS and Sony.

IMHO I believe that Nintendo released the Wii as a test to see how well the public would adopt the Wiimote. They still haven' t focused on third party devs outside of Ubisoft, and we still know next to nothing about Wii' s online service. This leads me to my belief that the Wii was released as a test. Hey, it costs next to nothing to make and so Nintendo are making bucket loads of cash on it right now. Now that they have seen how well the Wii has sold to mainly the casual gamer, they will be primed to announce the Wii 2 with features that will still cater to the casual gamer, but also to the hardcore gamer.

Then you have all the catered Titles Nintendo have uo their sleeves to keep Wii the hot thing to buy.. (Wii fit being the latest one we know about)..

I don' t understand you at all. You play games all these hardcore games, yet you keep harping on about the Wii. Wii Sports sucks, it was fun for the first 4 or 5 hours(not consecutive, but cumulative) and the majority of the reason for that being the newness of the wii-mote. The only way I would ever want to play Wii sports again is if they basically made a Fight Night, Virtua Tennis, MLB the Show, and Tiger woods all with great controls in one game. The demo of " Everybody' s Gold" (is that it?) on the PSN is more fun than Wii sports golf.

I enjoyed Mario Galaxy, but it wasn' t worth purchasing a Wii for, I guess I overhyped it in my mind thinking it would be as good as Mario 64. I haven' t played Metroid yet, so I can' t knock that, I' ve been meaning to try but haven' t had the time.

I realise the Wii is selling well, and that the reasons you give are generally valid, but it just boggles my mind that someone who plays great games like Mass Effect, Crysis, UT3, VF5, CoD etc, can be interested in the mind numbing boredom that is the Wii(excluding a couple key games).

The only thing I give the Wii is that it has the coolest Resident Evil 4 version ever. I wanna play SMG, but not even Zelda was worth it on Wii, the controls were gimmicky on that one and nothing more. I think the Wii is fun for playing with lots of people that don' t mind playing dumb games together, and I admit WarioWare is a lot of fun, but the Wii isn' t really my thing.

In my opinion the thing we might see is even more peripherals(that will work with one or two games) and they will just make it so if you want to play the new games you have to buy all of the peripherals for that game. I refuse to buy a Wii, because I would feel like I was going against what I think games should be(not gimmicky). I also feel like it is making " gaming" become more of a mainstream popular thing(the best example are the people who claim to be " gamers" but not geeks/nerds).

Having borrowed my friends SMG game, i can say im even further dissapointed with the Wii. While its a decent looking game it ofcourse comes short on all the next gen titles on ps3 and 360.

The wii mote controls are useless, and i cant help thinking how much better the game would be if i had a normal pad and could control the camera.

All i can say is, people are idiots for following the wii craze, there is nothing special about the machine, well nothing good atleast.

Exactly, im stating the facts of the gamers Wii Draws, I admire Nintendo' s Business Models and the fact they still make better games than anyone else if they really want to, OOT GOTY 2007, SMG GOTY 2008.

Games are made for everyone to enjoy, both hardcore titles and Casual, its not the case of liking one or the other.. I like quality titles that do what they are made to do and do it properly.. VF5 = Hardened, Hardcore Brawler, Wii sports = Casual easy-to-pick-up Sports game. Both executed really well.

Besides, Wii has IMO (and ALOT of other gamers) the best game to come out of this generation: SMG.

It was more directed to the long line of Wii praising posts, not just this one.

I just still have a hard time understanding how core gamers can enjoy the Wii so much. I buy and play as many games as I can get my hands on, and I just don' t find the Wii games all that enjoyable, not because I want to be bored by them, I just am, and the same goes for all my friends. My Wii has only been turned on once since Christmas, and it was to play Super Mario 3.

I have to give you that. Both were and are amazing.

Virtua, how can you admire Nintendo for pretty much hustling millions of people who up until now have had little to no connection to gaming in their life?

Most of us here know that the Wii is not even close to the $280 they want for it here in Canada. We understand that the Wii is just an overclocked Gamecube with a gimmick control slapped onto it. We understand that Nintendo are charging consumers over $100 just for the Wiimote as you can pick up a brand new Gamecube for $100 or under on its own. You say great business model, I say taking advantage of unformed consumers, and furthermore you can almost say it is similar to insurance companies ripping the elderly off because they know how to target that uninformed audience.

Listen. I sit here at work everyday hearing a lot of people praising their purchase of the Wii, and how fortunate they were for finding one at Christmas. They talk about Wii Sports and such, but as soon as I bring up myself owing a 360 and soon to be an owner of a PS3 and start talking up the awesome releases for those systems, they turn into a group of deer caught in the headlights. Looking at me dumbfounded, wondering what is a 360 and very few knowing what a PS3 is. These are people who are completely uninformed about gaming, and got caught up in the new Ferby, the new Elmo, or the new Pet Rock. The Wii is selling not because of quality, but because of our new age human nature in which everyone has to have the latest electronic craze.
