Nintendo DS Allows for Voice-Over IP Calls

The Nintendo DS includes 802.11b WiFi capabilities, which will no doubt be used in the future by developers to allow for head-to-head challenges over the internet, scoreboards, and other game-related goodness.

However, this functionality coupled with the Nintendo DS microphone will also allow you to call someone, for free, using Voice-Over IP technology. This could prove useful at a location such as a foreign airport, where cell phone service will most likely be highly unfeasible, and without the long-distance charges of pay phones. Of course, this could also prove useful on school campuses or your own WiFi equipped house.

this will be the most coolest feature on the ds. and even if the ds didnt have all that cool stuff i would still buy i because i no nintendo. and they make the best handhelds.

when they said name i thought they just wanted it so when they send you a message they could use that. but they used it as a screen name so thats why its my real name.

I find it hard to believe Nintendo will pay for both online gaming and your online access.

Kind of like how you can play online for free on the PS2, but you still have to pay an ISP for internet access.

I can see the DS having free online play, and free phone calls, but not operate as a free ISP at the same time.

I don' t think anyone said Nintendo was providing an ISP, only that you could make those calls through the DS.
I think the rest is up to us.
