Did you try clearing your caches?
How?
Go to the system blade and then select memory. Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices? Performing this function will also clear any software updates.

Have you tried repeatedly hitting it with a hammer? If that doesnt work, did you try calling MS. The first option will help before the latter

Duffman I read something about NAT settings (whatever that means). For some reason the update changed the setting from " open" to " strict" , try to change it back to " open" . I don' t even know how or where to do this, with my connection issues I can' t load most web pages. I' m still looking for instructions though.

If your warranty is still good, ship it off to the hot sounding woman at MS customer support & let them wrack their brains for hours trying to reset your firmware!

The update finally downloaded!! YES! I don' t know how but it just did! I' m back on Live.  And just in time to download the Bioshock demo.

Duffman it sounds like you might have been experianceing some router difficultly, I' ve heard of when Firewalls are set to high or there-abouts, it starts to limit what comes in and out, and in your case, block xbox Live. If you where messing around it [or by your family unknown to you] you should check it and set it low.
But it looks like you fixed your problem by yourself. maybe it was something else?
