DS' s Wholesome Image Goes SPLAT!
-
Jul 02, 2007 23:49
Apparently one of the Dr. Kiwashima rip off titles calls you retarded if you don' t perform well enough. Ubisoft is pulling DS game Mind Quiz off the market due to comments in the game which have been labelled as offensive. Poor performance sees the player labelled in a manner derogatory to the disabled. Ubisoft has blamed the Japanese development team for the error and its own slack quality assurance. " As soon as we were made aware of the issue we stopped distribution of the product and are now working with retailers to pull the game off the market," a spokesperson told the BBC. " The game was developed in Japan, and we unfortunately did not pick up on the offending word in our quality assurance," said the publisher. The offensive blunder emerged when a woman contacted BBC Radio Ulster to complain about the game. The woman' s three-year-old son had suffered from brain damage before passing away just before last Christmas.

The moral: get your s*** together when selecting the words you use. And this isn' t a matter of substantive free speech, it' s a gratuitous use of an insulting term. Interesting, though, that Ubi is trying to pin the blame on the Japanese. I don' t recall the French being paragons of cultural sensitivity.

Retard, retarded and retardation are all medical terms. There' s nothing wrong with the words themselves, it' s the manor and context in which they are used (in general use and in the game) that' s the issue.

I thought it called them spastics (the more popular term over in Euro-land). Anyway, if you fail at a game like that, then you deserve to be ridiculed.

Poor translation? Who cares, *** you guys are uptight. I don' t care if I get a rating of retardation in a videogame, it seems more amusing than anything else. I guess no one has a sense of humour anymore. Just picture all the kids playing this and after failing they cry and smash their DS against a wall, lmao! What can be more fun than watching a kid or even an adult being called a retard by a virtual doctor in a videogame? Game Over you fucking retard, you fail at life. LOL!

I can see where you' re coming from, but you don' t have a mentally-retarded person in your family now do you (legally speaking I mean)? Some people take that personally, because they' re... well... personal.
