Unreal Tournament III>Gears - May 30, 2007 13:31
" The latest issue of OXM features a six-page article on Unreal Tournament 3. More important, the preview contains the first details regarding the Xbox 360 version of the game, which both the developers and the magazine editors confirmed it is looking in its current state better than Gears of War.

The reason for that is Epic Games has improved the Unreal Engine 3 for Xbox 360 since they shipped Gears of War six months ago.

In the preview, Epic Games’ Steven Polge, the lead designer of Unreal Tournament 3, confirms that the Xbox 360 version of the game will support four-player co-op and two-player split-screen in the single-player campaign, which will let you take different paths depending on the decisions you take.

Regarding the controls, Polge revealed that they are so good that half the people who work on the game prefer to play the Xbox 360 version. Furthermore, the guy responsible for the controls has stepped in playtest sessions, where everyone was on keyboards, and with a controller he kicked everyone’s butt.

Now that Epic is known among Xbox gamers for Gears or War rather than its emblematic Unreal franchise, the comparison between the two series is inevitable.

Jerry O’Flaherty, the art director for both games, says that “Gears if a more confined game. UT is about big, huge distances. The speed of UT is so quick; it’s not a walking environment, it’s a running or flying environment.”

Finally, Polge chipped into the discussion saying: “It’s Gears on crack. Cover is for wimps!”

We encourage you to go and get the July issue of OXM to read this UT3 preview, which shows for the first time the Necris Scavenger, new levels and new screenshots of the game with plenty of gore and a disturbing headshot."

I can' t wait for this game. Question is, do I get the PC version or the 360 version. Fuck it, I' ll get both.

I' m not talkiing about graphics, I' m taking about which will be the better game. In my eyes EPIC' s pet projects can' t touch their flagship franchise. IMO no third person game to date can beat UT III, especially not in multiplayer.

-UT3 will control much more naturally
-It won' t have some piss-ant cover system
-action is faster (better pace)
-4 player online co-op for the story mode instead of 2 player
-the weapons are more badass
-It' s 1st person view
-PC version, extra content from mod community (tons of free maps)
-hoverboards

I predict the same for my tastes.

If there is any game worthy of the title " Halo killer" this is it. I' m sure it will sell millions, but I doubt it' ll outsell Halo 3.

I' m for sure getting UT3 for PC, but I will definetly at least try it on 360, perhaps buy it if it is that awesome. I' ll be modding and mapping for UT3 and it would be really sweet to be able to play my stuff on 360.

I could also see this game being huge amoung professional play for console gaming, perhaps it could beat out Halo 3 for the main game in MLG. It obviously will be huge for pro gaming on PC.

Unreal 2 was a primarely single player game and it wasn' t the greatest. So I' m not really expecting too much from the single player, but hoping to be surprised. UT2004 is my favorite fps for multiplayer and I have no doubt UT3 will live up to my expectations in that area.

Gears proved Epic can make a great console game. I' m still skeptical on the aiming though. How can he control better than mouse and keyboard? Is there some sort of auto-aim (and if there is what is that like, what kinda skill does it take to use) or is it just that finely tuned?

you cant really compare the two games like that. It' s like comparing CS to Q3. Both games are fun but its a totally different style.

One is pizza, the other is icecream, both are good, and i wouldnt want to miss any of it!

ofcourse..

you see the ice cream have been standing out on the table for a few months now and its getting a bit stale, but if you go to the store and buy some new ice cream, it might look more enjoyable than the pizza!

In short, for a game like UT3 they can never make it equal or better than mouse and keyboard. It simply has too much twitch reaction type gameplay. Having said that, it can still be done well. Unreal Championship on Xbox was still very polished and playable. There was auto aim of course but it wasn' t too severe. Digital Extremes did an excellent job of making it work instead of simply porting it.

Unreal Championship 2 sucked ass in my opinion though. It went completely the wrong way. It had boring mechanics and repetitive melee button bashing. Digital Extremes didn' t work on that title though so that' s probably why.

I' ll be buying UT3 for the PC. The M+K support and the mod community are what make it really stand out.

Guys, guys, I think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves....

Killzone 2 is getting a playable demo soon. We might see a Halo killer yet.

Hopefully its not more of the same, the other Unreals where great, owned moset of them for the pc but I got bored of them after a month or so, when Battlefeild 2 came out I never played Unreal 2004 online again.
Change is inevitable. Except from a vending machine.

How good do those scans look!? The headshot in the 3rd pic looks nasty!

This game is definitely worth upgrading for.

It' s a story. Unreal and Unreal 2 had a story and I' m assuming it goes along with those. They really haven' t talked much about it though.

OMFG does this game not look amazing or what?

Looking at those pics, I am reminded of what I was reading on the XBOX Live forums yesterday. Someone was talking about how the 360 has already reached its graphical and frame rate limits. Whoever made that post needs to take a look at these new UT3 pics, as well as the new Mass Effect pics.

I hate the BF games. I liked the original BF1942 because it was the first good large scale multiplayer with vehicles game (IMO). But I didn' t like the controls for it, they force you to use wierd mouse acceleration and the likes. Then they continued doing this for all the sequals. While the games are still fun, they weren' t good enough for me to do anything but play the demos. Forcing someone to use nub controls for their mouse is unacceptable. Most hardcore gamers have good a good enough mouse they shouldn' t need acceleration (which makes control less accurate) and there are so many different mice forcing someone to use controls like that is just stupid.
Oh yeah, and EA sucks.

I still play UT2k4, it' s my favorite multiplayer game, especially for LAN.
