Xbox fans speak of 65nm. But 45nm 360 on the way

Not sure if this is news to most 360 fans but i stumbled on this piece of news that might get you excited- http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=10265 Chia said the design of the 45nm video-game processor is not yet complete, and hinted that production of the CPU - as well as other products designed for the 45nm process - is not likely to begin until late 2008 or early 2009. " As 65nm just started production in the last two quarters, you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that timeframe," said Chia, referring to when Chartered expects to begin production with the 45nm processor.

It' s interesting, but I have to wonder if the difference in the heat output of these chips is going to be enough to overcome the other shoddy components within the console that actually fail under heat stress -- some sort of X-clamp that Eddie has mentioned.

this coupled with the fact that the 360 elites are getting a new second heatsink might finally lower the red rings. But dont count on a major reduction od rrod untill Ms get their act together and redeisgn the board right.

I won' t be satisfied unless it' s .000002nm. Anything else is just way too big and quite worthless.

There' s never going to be anything much finer than about 12 nm.

Well, probably not until some kind of quantum technology is developed. I mean we' re talking about connections that are only a few atoms wide at that point.

As far as I know <12nm is already on the roadmaps of the big chip manufacturers.

There' s never going to be anything much finer than about 12 nm. How do they make those chips so small? how are the physically assembled?

How do they make those chips so small? how are the physically assembled? you just wondered now after reaching 90nm ? i don' t know how the hell did they do that but that' s not a big surprise seriously, 120 nm is mind blowing if you think of how they can assemble it. so 45nm or 12 nm... the theory is already there , all it needs is money and time and demand.

how are the physically assembled? Robots with laser brains. The whole shift over to multi-core processors is a strategy to keep advancing processing speeds pretty close to Moore' s Law (processing power doubles roughly every 24 months) since they are reaching the physical limitations of how tiny they can actually make these things.
