i could have sworn max payne was a third-person shooter, but anyway... mario 64 definately revolutionized 3d gaming, and in terms of multiplayer (in consoles), probably goldeneye.

VF1 revolutionized the 3D fighter. Metal Gear Solid for the stealth/action genre.

Was Virtua Fighter the first truly 3D fighting game? As was Virtua racing the first truly 3D racing game? Oh, and as for Sonic... I was alking more of his populatiry than the actual mechanics of the games. Sonic was the first video game pop icon. And I never owned Super Mario Brothers, or any other Nintendo made game ' till I got my Gamecube.
