True Fantasy Live Online gets the axe
Microsoft Japan and Level 5 halt development of their massively multiplayer online role-playing game for the Xbox.

Microsoft Japan today announced the cancellation of True Fantasy Live Online, the promising massively multiplayer role-playing game for the Xbox that was first unveiled in 2002. The game was being developed by veteran developer Level 5, whose recent work has included the Dark Cloud franchise for the PlayStation 2.

In a press release issued this morning in Japan, Microsoft stated that the cancellation was due to the lack of progress in development. Citing the game' s inability to deliver a level of quality satisfactory to consumers, Microsoft opted to cancel the project, which had been slated for a winter release this year in Japan.

When contacted for comment, a representative from Microsoft in the US issued the following statement: " The difficult decision to cancel True Fantasy Live Online was based on a number of careful considerations, including the game' s progression to date and the remaining development time needed to complete such an ambitious project. The MMORPG genre, across all platforms, has become an incredibly crowded and competitive marketplace. In response, Microsoft Game Studios has decided to streamline its portfolio, making fewer bets in this genre."

Added the representative, " At Microsoft Game Studios, we continually evaluate our portfolio strategy and investments to ensure we are achieving our most important objectives of creating successful, platform-driving titles in a timely manner. We truly appreciate all the support True Fantasy Live Online has received from its fans and the games community."

Man, you have got to be kidding me. That was going to be the game I was going to play all summer. I guess I have to find something else. This is extremely depressing.

Apparently the game was rubbish. Anyhow this should mean more resources will be poured into Dragon Quest VIII which can only be a good thing

^^ You may consider my name a reference to my fanboyism. It isn' t tho, I just happen to only own a PS2. I like xbox tho, many of my friends have one so I get my gaming fix thru them.

The halo comment was a joke that I knew xbox fanatics would take too seriously, thanks for proving me right

How exactly was it a FFXI ripoff????

It was another MMORPG and it wouldve made FFXI run for its money.

It might actually be released in the future.Maybe even a launch title for XBOX 2.

Personally, I hate most games with cel-shading as the graphic style. When it was just PaRappa, it was cool...but now we have Mario, Zelda, XIII, and various other games using the style...and I don' t like it. However, there is just as much room to call TFLO a ripoff of FFXI as there is to call FFXI a ripoff of Asheron' s Call.

I called it a FFXI ripoff not b/c it was another MMORPG. The cel-shading looked good, and was it' s strong point. But, perhaps you' ve seen the images of the cities, jungles, and castles that all looked almost identical to FFXI locales. I wouldn' t compare EQ and FFXI b/c they both have incredibly different styles. TFO looked exactly like FFXI with voice support and cel-shaded graphix

I honestly couldn' t tell ya. I do know, however, that FFXI was out in japan like 2 years before we ever saw it here. So, I would suspect it was in development quite some time ago.

Even tho I said TFO was a ripoff of FFXI I would have still wanted to play it.
