Take The Journey--2005
-
May 22, 2004 19:20
A few years back in the dying(some would already say dead) adventure game genre a gem of a game entitled " The Longest Journey" emerged. It turned out to be quite a treat for adventure game aficionados. I found the story a bit cliche but the world was beautiful and it immersed you in a great...well....adventure. Fast forward to present day: the sequel that was announced with a working name of The Longest Journey:Static was renamed to Dreamfall. It' s already looking like it will deliver on what Adventure games do best: telling a story. I encourage everyone to check it out at it' s official website: http://www.dreamfall.com/

Wow that looks awesome. One quick question... (here I am going to sound very very stupid) what exactly is an adventure game? (see told you I' d look stupid)

Rikka: the longest journey was a point and click adventure made in the same style as the old monkey island games, or gabriel knight...Sam n' Max etc. The main element is puzzle solving in order to advance the story.... Myst is another one. Apparently Dreamfall will include some action elements this time around...but it will still most likely rely on a strong narrative and nice visuals to keep the player interested. Hope that answers your question, I realize a lot of games could be considered adventure games :) Here' s a link to a demo of the first game if you are interested: http://www.longestjourney.com/download/demo/ and, one more link of interest: http://www.gamespot.com/features/6098994/p-10.aspx

Best Adventure game ever made? Hero' s Quest (IBM) Yep, this one had it all, even back in the late ' 80' s. You could be a fighter, magic user, or thief, there was a central town where you could ask people questions, buy items, enter guilds, and even work for money. There was a castle (where you could also get some work, or train with your weapon if you were a fighter), lots of cool places on the map to explore, and although not very big, and quite short, it was still pretty darn complex for its day. I must' ve played it through a dozen times, even with my slow-ass 640k RAM computer that could barely handle the animatons. LOL

I dunno what it is about them.

Heh...yeah. Sometimes the graphics would get a little screwed up on my computer, and during battle, a brigand would look like he had oatmeal all over his face or something. I remember running away from those crazy creatures that looked liked dinosaurs when I just started out...you can' t kill those freakin' things early on! You just have to run, and hope you make it back to some shelter, somewhere. I swear, I played the SNOT out of that game.

I really need to play this game again I only played through it once. Did YOU ever play the longest journey? If so, what did you think? Other recent adventure games I enjoyed were Syberia(the second one dissapointed me however), and Grim Fandango...this game just has so much personality and charm...the controls were kinda annoying though, but that is just a minor gripe.

No, besides Myst, Hero' s Quest is just about the only Adventure experience I' ve had. I don' t really play PC games, but I' d get The Longest Journey if it ever came out for consoles. Is Syberia II out for Xbox or PS2?
