Sony to re-take lost ground with Video Walkman?
-
Feb 12, 2007 19:00
Everybody seems to be at war with Apple products. Samsung and Meizu are already working on their " iPhone killers" . Microsoft has concocted the Zune and has released Vista as their main arsenals against the iPod and Mac OS X, respectively. Now, Sony is rumored to be planning on regaining their lost glory in the mp3 player department. Atraclife reports that according to " credible sources" , Sony is gearing up for a two, four, and eight GB video Walkman which is smaller than the iPod Nano. It is said to have the looks of the NW-A3000/100 units, but it would have a more flat and rectangular form - pretty much like its Apple counterpart. The alleged iPod Nano killer is rumored to have 8-10 hours of video playback, a super-slim look, and a gorgeous screen of larger size than that of the Nano. As for the GUI, it would still be the 3x3 menu layout similar to the A3000. It would have updated icons and better menu functionality. Rumor has it that it would come in four colors - violet, black, blue, and pink. As for the pricing, it could be the same or a bit higher than that of the Nano. Word has also come out that this Sony product is set for a March unveiling, until then, all we could do is speculate, speculate, and speculate. LINK Makes sense i guess.

About damn time. Weird how Sony has been so irrelevant in the portable market since mp3 took over. They just plain missed the boat and severely underestimated the mp3 market. With the Walkman brand name they really should be #2, if not number one. The more I think about it, it seems to me that Apple is so successful because they stepped up and did what Sony was supposed to be doing.

...I don' t know. For some reason, the name ' Walkman' still reminds me of portable cassette players... Anyway, I doubt the battery life. Sony and battery life...never good.

Is it just me or does this have the aroma of desparation? I mean Sony need something and it seems that the Ipod is the obvious target, however I would have thought that doing something with the PSP would have been better that way they could seriously damage Apple, the complete multi media system perhaps?

Wow, shadow_wulf, I had never given those symbols at the top of the post a second glance until you used a different one than the rest of the posters. I' d honestly forgotten those things existed. I think the reason Sony isn' t using the PSP for this is because the PSP is marketed mostly towards gamers. If they started marketing it towards the general public as well, then they would have their own image working against them. Walkman, on the other hand, is already associated with portable media (well, music, which is one form of media). Also, isn' t the PSP already capable of all this?

Every company manufacturing MP3 players wants pity sex from Apple, it' s not just Sony. Personally, I' m very outspoken about my dislike for the iPod, if only because I' m one of the more educated consumers. It' s very good for people who will stand a little sheepling for conveniences sake, but I' m not the kind of guy who likes to be told what he can put on his electronics. If I had to chose between the three (iPod, Zune, Sony), I' d take a Sony. I don' t like their business, but they make solid products. ... Actually, meh, screw all of them. I' m getting the new Sansa. Absolutely sexy.

I only buy the local Creative brand here in S' pore. They have the better sound technology, overall, even though their product design isn' t great and their players aren' t as hardy as I' d like them to be. But I haven' t gotten a video mp3 player...yet. I modded my DS so now it playes videos (but it' s a hassle with conversion) so I don' t really need one... Btw, how IS the Zune? It' s weird, I thought I' d hear a lot of haters but apparently the Zune is...competitive? I might consider it if it' s good (my old Zen Micro is very very busted...).

I had a (what I thought was) crappy Zen Nano all last year. It was about the size of a flip-top lighter, & 2/3 as wide, and that thing was beast. It survived water, direct electric shock, sand in the firewire cable, crap underneath the screen, that thing was amazing. It' s a shame you can only get the 1 gig around here. Btw, how IS the Zune? It' s weird, I thought I' d hear a lot of haters but apparently the Zune is...competitive? I might consider it if it' s good (my old Zen Micro is very very busted...).
Y' know? I rather like it. I think it was Mass that was having trouble with skippety playback when it first came out, but he' s the only one I' ve heard of with that issue. The WiFi song transfer thing is awesome, and best of all, their security is a joke.

Lol, Microsoft actually pulled through! Who da' thunk hm? I really want to try out the Wi-Fi thing. Too bad the color choices for Zune are pretty dull...maybe a next re-design, if any? Edit: Oh, and look at what you can get free with every Zune from Wal-Mart! - Walmart Sells Gay Porn Filled Zune To Little Girl

MS still hasn' t brought the Zune up to Canada. At least not in any of the regular retailers. I don' t get it, how hard is it to ship something over the border, especially when they sell all their other stuff up here.
