Sequels that are BETTER than the originals - Jun 14, 2004 00:00
Many times sequels are crap, but sometimes they turn out to be BETTER than the original games they were based on. Your faves? Here are some of mine:

Shinobi III
I liked this game better than Revenge of Shinobi and it is slightly better than Shadow Dancer, all of which were better than the original Shinobi arcade, which was still great!

Road Rash (3DO version)
Way better than any of the original Genesis Road Rash' s. Cool graphics, multiple paths and the ability to run over people was simply awesome. A sloppy port to the PSX and Saturn didn' t help, though.

Rallisport Challenge 2
Rallisport Challenge was an awesome game that blew me away with it' s realistic graphics and load times that were under a whole minute! Here comes part two with way better graphics, load times that are only 30+ seconds (remember back in the TurboGrafx and Sega CD days we had to wait nearly 5 to 10 seconds for games to load?) and even better gameplay. Why it takes so long to load 64 wimpy megs is beyond me. It takes just as long to load a 0.6 mile track as it does to load a 10+ mile track. What da hellz? But at least you can fiddle with your car and music settings while you wait.

Thunder Force IV
Being that Thunder Force III could be beaten without even touching the controller, TechnoSoft decided to make Thunder Force IV a real challenge. It can be beaten, but it is easy to get discouraged. Awesome graphics and amazing music round things out. You get rewarded with even more music if you beat the game, some of which is pumped-up versions of the music from Thunder Force Arcade. Sega saw that the Thunder Force series had a very large following and this meant instant sales, and lots of them. Being that Sega of America absolutely HATES money, they decided to change the name to " Lightening Force" for the US. Yes, they even misspelled it. Like I said, everyone at SoA is a moron. Maybe it' s just California?

Shenmue II
Much better than the original. The ability to pass time helped out quite a bit. Plus it was longer!

Super Castlevania IV
Way better than all of the other Castlevanias except maybe for Dracula X on the PC Engine. Very addicting and the game offered a great atmosphere. Dangling the limp whip around was kind of funny. I don' t get why it' s called " Super Castlevania IV" though. Is there another version of Castlevania IV somewhere that isn' t so super?

Super Hang-On
Greatest motorcycle racer on the planet!

Street Fighter II
I loved the original, but Street Fighter II was so much better.

Salamander 2
a.k.a Life Force 2, this is one of my favorite shooters of all time. Kudos to Konami!

Fatal Frame 2
I was so drawn into this game' s atmosphere. The original was too frustrating in the camera and control department to keep my attention for long but I overlooked those issues in the sequel because of how great everything else was.

I remember alot of Super NES games received the " Super" title, I always thought since the console was called the " Super" NES, developers saw fit to release games with the " Super" title. i.e. Super R-type, Super Double Dragon, Super Metroid ;)

They should have just called it " Super Castlevania" or " Castlevania IV" . Calling it " Super Castlevania IV" insinuates that there is a lesser, non-super version of Castlevania IV available. Maybe Konami is retarded?

Just off the top of my head:

Resident Evil 2
Gran Turismo 2 (and subsequently, GT 3)
TimeSplitters 2
Super Mario 3
RBI Baseball III
Vandal Hearts II
PGR 2
Double Dragon II
Street Fighter 2
Breath of Fire IV
Twisted Metal 2

As far as Castlevania goes, they kind of bounced around over the years, and some weren' t even technically sequels. However, just for the record, CV: SotN is not only the best CV, but it' s also one of the best games EVER (in my top 5).

Gradius III
One of the best shooters out there and the best Gradius game!

Shenmue II
The first three discs were just soo much better than the original Shenmue.

Resident Evil Zero
I love this one so much more than all of the others except for Code: Veronica.

Super Double Dragon
Absolutely adored this game! The fact that you could block and counter by grabbing your enemies and beating the crap out of them was just TOO friggin good.

Super Mario World
My most memorable Mario experience!

Valis II

Street Fighter Zero III

Fatal Fury 2

King of the Monsters II: The next thing

Daytona USA 2

As far as Castlevanias go, to tell you the truth, Dracula X for the PCEngine was my favorite Castlevania game both gaming and music-wise. There were just so many good tracks in the game whereas I only liked 4 themes in Nocturne/Symphony of the Night.

Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (how many of you dismissed this game at first for being a quickly-made sequel? I, for one)

Marvel vs. Capcom 2

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (for some reason, I could never get into the original in the way that I can the GBA edition)

Sonic 2

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike (in comparison to previous editions of Street Fighter 3)

I' d have included Zelda: Wind Waker in this list if they had doubled the number of dungeons in the game. I don' t know about you folk, but for me, the dungeon crawls are the best part of the Zelda games.

1. Hitman:Contracts
2. Splinter Cell:Pandora Tommarow
3. Burnout 2 (and very possibly 3 when it comes out)
4. WWE:Raw 2 (even tho the game still sucked)
5. GTA 3 is definatly better then the first 2, however they were classics
