I don' t know where you read that but as i said the aspect ratio doesn' t come into it. 480p displays 480 pixels horizontally regardless of whether it' s 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9. If it' s anamorphic 16:9 then it displays non-square pixels.

All the ' p' means is that the signal is progressive scan, it has jack shit to do with specific aspect ratios or widescreen resolutions.

When you watch 576p (like a PAL DVD) on NTSC EDTV it' s downscaled to 480p.

I' m saying that " 480p" symbol means 852x480 progressive just like " 720p" means 1280x720 progressive.

You can have 1200x720 progressive , but that' s not what " 720p" symbol stands for.

They made those " symbols" for specific resolutions to avoid unnecessary confusion.

PC resolutions have no meaning in Home Theater equipment.

720p is a different story as it' s a HDTV resolution where 480p isn' t.

I' m not sure , I would have to check this , but 480i doesn' t mean 640x480i on SDTV.It' s also different I don' t remember how many lines it had instead of 640 though :)
