With LED backlite LCDs, SED TVs and Laser TVs, it seems as though Televisions are finally getting a true overhaul. The TVs coming out on the market in two years will make everything we have today look like shit. LOL I hope you didn' t pay too much for that " new" HD TV...

I read up on this. Sounds great. I wonder how the picture quality compares against SED though?

It' ll also make everything you watch on TVs look like shit. You can have a fantastic display, but that' s all for naught if you have a crappy source that is compressed like HD-DVD or BluRay. You' ll be seeing the flaws in those formats big time. It' s akin to hooking up a new QSC digital amplifier and JBL theatrical speaker to a telephone. The phone call actually sounds worse than when you press the cell phone up to your ear and listen to it' s wimpy, pathetic li' l excuse for a speaker.

Well its like the HD thing, they will have to film it for the televisions. Its just like when colour televisions first came out, they had to use coloured film. Its not a big deal. Besides I have trouble understanding how the image would suffer if its not displaying the full range of colours it has to offer. A TV may display 16.7 million colours but it never displays them all at once anyways so I fail to see the problem.

I' m sure you guys can give me a detailed analysis of what I just said...

It' s a big deal because everyone is moving on to make content for what we have in the market right now, everything from film, animation, porn, etc. when you add a radically different thing you can' t expect everyone to jump onto it.

True but it doesn' t call for everyone to jump in right away, typical signals would look as they would on a DLP, these TVs can display three times more colour. If its not recieving new colours it won' t display them, big deal. Eventually when they do display those colours suddenly your TV kicks ass.

Another problem is with the ATSC broadcast standard which relies on the ancient MPEG2 codec. If this technology really takes off and the majority of HDTV owners have it, then ATSC simply won' t do. They' ll have to change it to a format which yields better (and less) compression. I think MPEG2 is 4:1:1 or maybe even 4:1:0. That' s a lot of missing color information, there. I can barely even stand ATSC compression on my CRT set, and I am getting 19mbps over the air (re: antenna). Cable and satellite are even worse.

I was dissapointed in broadcast HDTV as well, its not uncommon for me to be watching a movie and notice distortions or pixelation. HD-DVD on the other hand looks brilliant.

This may be a stupid question, and I admit I know next to nothing about camera imaging, but the tech in me has to ask:

How many colors, as in percentage of what we can see, does film actually capture?

It probably captures the entire spectrum, but if it doesn' t then this tech would be pretty useless. What' s the point of being able to display colors that the camera can' t capture or process?

Film? It captures very close to the entire spectrum. Video? Not even close. The dynamic range on video is very poor and blows out all of the highlights.

Films converted to video formats mostly look fine with what we have today. But stuff originally shot on video tends to look bad, like Star Wars 2 and 3 (though they cover any flaws with CGI), Miami Vice the movie, and a few other movies that were shot at 1080p resolution instead of on film.

This laser buisness looks interesting, but untill then, I' m putting my money into a nice stable 22" CRT monitor. I know those work.
