According to AmTech analyst PJ McNealy. Analysts suck, they deserve to die. Buuuuuuuuuut, Sony obviously didn' t meet their claimed 400,000 launch target. It' s unlikely there will be 1M PS3' s in the US before 2007. Shame. LINK

These launch numbers are so low, one can barly claim PS3 has launched at all. These numbers just don' t count as massmarket by any stretch of the imagination, despite the hype. I' m not knocking PS3 in any way, just saying they need to get production ramped up sharpish.

The question is; if they' re making a $300-ish loss on every unit sold, how many can they actually afford to sell?!

Not many. Sony is waiting until they can make actual profit to put more PS3' s on the Market, this time it wasn' t the Blue Diodes fault.

I dont think its the official launch. I think the spring release was a slipup and what was meant was spring next year (hence the europe delay til March). This slipup forced them to push for an earlier release date. So they figured get as many out as they can before the holidays they will easily be sold thus making them look like hot stuff. Fuck the quality just throw them out there. They knew it was gonna hurt but not any more then more bad publicity. They did manage a few deals here and there to get some money back for each console sold. Had plans gone as origionally they would sell pricey pre-orders for the holidays and use rapage amounts of marketing til spring. The whole " its coming" routine. Thats what I think sort of...at least somthing along those lines. Ya know? So far they done all they can to cushion this (2 Million!!!...400,000! ...er 150,000...close enough...whatever fuck you buy it!). Well thats all I can figure.

They' ve already slowed PSP production and will be hoping PS2 sales over the holiday period will " carry" them into the start of next year and in a sense " cover" what they' re losing on PS3. Getting more PS3' s into the market isn' t there main priority right now. They' ve managed a paper launch and will now be elaluating whether the console or the service has any major faults. Fautly machines will be fixed/replaced and manufacturing lines tweaked accordingly. Blu-Ray sales may help some but they aren' t significant enough to make much of a difference. They will need to strike a balance where they' re making a similar kind of profit on PS2 to their losses on PS3. PS2 sales should be high during December and so while the games division is bleeding money because of their next gen machine, it' s partially stemmed by PS2. Reducing PS3' s costs won' t be easy. NVIDIA won' t be any help and so the GPU won' t be getting any smaller. CELL is still in it' s infancy and because of the heat and included HDD the fan size won' t be reduced. If they' d gone with a DVD9 version (as well as a Blu-Ray version) they' d be in a far beter standing right now, and would' ve been able to outsell Microsoft very easily.

Have developers been asked about the current situation of ps3 (should these numbers become official)? I mean i' m sure they first the were told there would be 4million by years end, then 2 million, then 1 million and now estimates have only 400,000 by years end. I don' t know how much a game like Resistance cost to make but im pretty sure its in the 10s of millions and having less 300,000 units (currently) Insomniac won' t break even for a long time IMO, and thats assuming 70%+ attach rate which (including JApan) has not happened. This must have ps3 exclusive developers extremely worried. sonys silence on the matter mustn' t be comforting either.

None. Tell me folks, how does a console maker make profits back the fastest? Games. Now, what is the attatch rate on games-per-ps3? Something ridiculously small isn' t it? No games, no profit, no profit, less consoles, less consoles, less chance of price drop, easy logic. It' s a vicious cycle, & I' m (uncharacteristically) not joking about this one. Sony is in deep trouble if they don' t turn around. sonys silence on the matter mustn' t be comforting either.
Y' see, there I disagree. Every time Sony has opened their mouth, it hasn' t looked worse for them. In my unprofessional opinion, it' s high time Sony shut-up and started to re-analyze their game plan. I just hope it' s soon enough. I' m not fond of the new Sony, but it' s always a bummer to see a console company do poorly.
