Why are there blu-ray players at all?
Why are there blu-ray players at all?  Blu-Ray players are outdated. The movies we watch are 'files', why do you need a 'player' for a certain disc type at all? Why isn't this all done with usb drives? (that could be as secure as any disc is now)

Probably because USB drives do not offer the capacity or the speed yet in which to deliver a quality version of an HD movie. You may say "But I can compress a movee in hd to fit on a single dvd lol". Sure, but you compress the crap out of it. Compression is bad. Such compression is for losers that do not deserve to be alive. You know what else is bad? Lossy audio. Yup, that Dolby TrueHD, DTSHDMA and Linear PCM take up a fair amount of space.
Bottom line: We are not yet at the point where we can just offer a USB-type drive. Plus, we'd still need players to play those USB thingies on.

Such compression is for losers that do not deserve to be alive.
Bit harsh there Joe. Some very clever people made that compression possible. I still struggle to compress my clothes into my suitcase when I'm going on holiday.

probably because a 16 GB USB drive without the movie on it costs more than a blu ray or dvd movie.
With H264 1080p movies with about blu ray quality typically are 10-15 GB.
I would rather download them, they don't need to be limited to 1080p either.

Blu-ray supports the more advanced H.264 and VC-1 video encoding algorithms (codecs) as well as MPEG-2, which is used for DVD.
