PS3 Price drop - Oct 19, 2007 13:38
I' ve been waiting for this to happen. I knew it was close but i didn' t know exactely when. I appologize if this is old news but i was away these last few days and i don' t know how old this is.

For Canadians especially this is a sweet deal. The Canadian dollar has been doing very well lately compared to the American dollar. We' re pretty much on par now, but prices were still high reflecting the old exchange rate. It seems with this latest price drop Sony decided to make things right.

PS3 before and after
80GB
$659.99-> $499.99

60GB
$549.99->approx. $449.99

40GB (november 2nd)
$399.99

Original Canadian Launch prices:

60GB->$559.99

20GB->$549.99

Now I' m ready to pick one up. This weekend I' m visiting my Grandfather. So I won' t have time. But next weekend i' ll go hunting to find a PS3.

Sony is going to take over the world.

lol. Tempting to get one for the blu-ray movies. How does it compare to stand-alone players and does it support 1080p blu ray movies?

Yes for 1080p.

It' s a pretty good Blu-ray player especially for the price at 400$. In order to get the best ones you' d have to spend at least 700$ and that' s without the gaming functionality. Much better than the older ones that do not support firmware upgrading. The first ones didn' t even have an Ethernet port. The PS3 still has a much faster startup than most Blu-ray players due to a strong processor.

The only thing is that you can' t burn Blu-ray discs with it. But honestly who cares? How much HD content do we have to burn. I' d rather wait two years or so for BD ROM drives to become affordable. In the mean time a PS3 is looking really good.

Even if you have no interest in the PS3 as a gaming device, it also has a lot of media hub capabilities that dedicated Blu-ray players don' t have.

If you look for reviews on the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. You want to make sure they' re current as new features have been added since launch. Such as 1080/24p and DVD upscaling.

I' ve read a few reviews that said that;

PS3 as a Blu-ray player>Xbox 360 HD-DVD addon as a HD-DVD player.

I still find no use for HD players of any format what so ever thus far. So PS3 shall still wait til 2008. Nice price now but alas 2008 or bust.

If you have a 40" or greater screen, HD video is amazing. I personally use a 56" Samsung and my buddy has a 61" Samsung, both 1080p. Watching Planet Earth, Crank, Apocalypto, and 300(not as good, because the art direction doesn' t show off the resolution the way the others do), is just a whole different experience. Anyone who says there isn' t much of a differenc between 720p and 1080p obviously don' t have the TV to support their claims, or are just blind.

When I used my ps3 on my 22" when I got it at launch, the difference from 720p to 1080p was noticeable and clearly better, but when I got the 56" , the difference was night and day, and even now, when it goes to a close up, it still makes me say " damn" .

HD video is so good that I' m tempted at times to get a HD-DVD addon for the 360, but I stop myself because I don' t want to support that format, not just because I feel Blu-Ray is the better format, but moreso that I want one to fail so that we can just get on with HD content on one format and really get the sector moving.

edit: I should add that when I mention comparing 720p to 1080p at launch I mean the difference between games, because at launch, Blu Ray firmware only supported 480p or 1080p, there was no 720p option. That of course has now changed.

Oh, and the price drop is great, I' ve seen the 80gb bundle for 449.99 at walmart, and every other electronics store has the 60gb for 449.99. I hope it makes MS change the price of their elite, because as it stands, the ps3 offers way more hardware for $50 less(not talking about games, don' t flame).

Most experts on the HD subject will let you know that you unless you have a HDTV of 50 inches or larger, you will not notice any difference between 720p and 1080p. Now I don' t know for myself as I have always watched movies and played my games on a 62 inch Samsung.

Anyway back on topic. As Agent pointed out, this is especially great news for us Canucks!!!!! My 28th B-day is on November 4, so I know what I will be getting..............from myself. I know what I' m getting from my wife. A swift kick in the ass!!! lol

supports full 1080p, and is the cheapest and easily the best blue ray player you can buy, its start up time is very short and is very quiet [i hear the 40gb models are even quieter]

I' d go with the 80 though Agent.

I already made up my mind, I' m going for the 80GB model as soon as I can find one. I' ll probably stop to pick one up sometime next week whenever I can. Hopefully I won' t run into a supply problem.

I would get one tonight but I' m burnt. I had a wake and a funeral to attend the last few days. I hate funerals, they' re exhausting. I don' t feel like doing anything right now. When you go to a funeral and you' re related to the deceased, the family owns you for that day. Your crappy no pay job for the day is to stand near the dead carcase and greet people you never met before in you life. The whole time you' re thinking damn, I hope I' m next so I don' t have the misfortune of seeing these people again.

Funerals are the absalute worst social gathering you could attend. I don' t understand why we do them. The only thing that comes close in misery are weddings, speaking of which I have one to attend tomorrow.

Weddings are like watching a couple make out for 6 hours, the shittiest way to spend a weekend. The food usually sucks and the music is even worse. Don' t ever think that someone wants to go to your wedding, they don' t.

But yeah...look at that price drop.

I went to Best Buy and Future Shop earlier to buy some stuff I don' t need, like another black 360 controller, a game and a charging station. While there I noticed both had no ps3' s out, or in the cages(they keep new releases in huge lockable cages). Whereas a couple weeks ago, there were 6 or more at each store with more in the back no doubt. Same goes for 360' s, there were only a few pro' s and no elites around.

Looks like the ps3' s price cut has helped it sell here, and Halo 3 has helped the 360 sell. In fact, as I walked towards the store from my car I saw a guy with the Halo 3 edition 360 and a few games.

That sucks dude. Did you know the family member well? I' m honestly not sure which is worse. Knowing them, or not. On the one hand, it' s always awful losing somebody you know well. Been there, done that, it blows. On the other hand though, I remember attending quite a few funerals as a little kid (about 5 of my great grandparents died in quick succession). I didn' t know any of them well enough to have an emotional attachment, but I was still stuck in a bunch of funeral homes in stuffy suits surrounded by incredibly sad people.

Times like that made me glad I owned a Game Boy.

Yeah, conventional wedding receptions are a bore. Although, I' m taking it you' ve never been to a traditional Polish wedding. The music' s all very ethnic, so if you aren' t into it, it gets irritating, but the food' s consistently amazing and you get free entertainment. I' ve been to three, and at every one the alcohol' s bought & paid for.

Watching drunks should become our national sport. Well, that or tag-team porn & bowling.

Spiderman 3 because it' s on sale new for $20 and I can go trade it in for $15 at Blockuster, grabbing my buddy a copy of Warhawk, picking up Orange Box for PC, and pre-ordering CoD4.

Grandma, 77 years young. I knew her well enough, but what can we do about these things, it' s the circle of life. The Pastor who pissed me off enough when he promoted a Christian book during the service had one interesting thing to say. It was this, you' re not living until lose the fear of death. I think that' s good advice.

It was good, she wasn' t sick or had some painful accident. She simply went to take a nap and didn' t wake up, we can only hope to die that way.

It was strange though she has an identical twin, whom I' ve never met before this. So it was like she was dead but attending her own funeral at the same time.

Wow, the same thing happened at my grandmother' s funeral, it was like her twin was the exact opposite of her. Thats odd, twilight zone.
