When BluRay inevitably reaches the right price it'll shoot upwards in popularity.  I've been holding off due to the price feeling as though DVD was more than good enough.  But once most movies come out in BR format and the tech is accessible at a reasonable price - people will start comparing quality rather than expense.

We never got really VCD in the UK, but I can imagine it was the same between VCD and DVD. 

To be fair, Blu-ray growth in the UK is up something like 231% (a real figure from the British Video Association) over last year.  That is a pretty great uptick.

I think if it were not for the recession (maybe depression?) in the States, it'd be a lot bigger here.  The players themselves are stagnating in terms of unit sales, and that's a big reason why the costs of the discs themselves have not really gone down.

The good news is that discounted, entry-level players are coming into the marketplace, but the flipside is whether or not they'll be worth it since there are so many discs that are unplayable on units with older profiles.

BR players are being upped by the PS3, I have no idea what the figures are for actual BR discs sold, but I know it isn't even close to DVD. They're typically double the price for the exact same thing, although I'm sure someone will point out that "zomg!!111 Teh bluray is sooo00000 much bettarz!", despite the fact that its the exact same damn movie with no different features, only it looks slightly better if you have fucking super vision.

...another thing that BR will have to deal with is piracy at its highest. When DVDs were first introduced piracy wasn't half as bad as it is now, which I assume the risings of piracy were mostly due to high speed internet becoming affordable.


I know eventually BR will have to take over as the main format, probably due to some jackass company cutting DVD production, but I just don't see its importance outside of the gaming industry.

Of course there are more DVD discs sold considering the penetration of the format in homes, but while DVD sales are decreasing, Blu-ray is seeing growth.

In terms of the home video market, it's huge.  Brick and mortar stores are starting to stock the discs day one and studios are pushing the technology in new, exciting ways.

BD Live is a cool concept, but can you imagine what other interactive features sets will include in the future?  It's reminiscent of when studios implemented bonus material on DVDs; the leap from bare bones releases to high-quality, supplemental material was staggering.

Here, we have a format where filmmakers can literally engage their audience live.  How is that not cool?

Who doesn't want to hear Michael Bay talk about how he created racist robots?  Or McG cry live on camera as fanboys call him names and send him pictures of their junk.

Productions costs per BR are like $2 more per disc over DVD, it will really take off when they stop ripping people off releasing BR movies for $30-35, I mean who ever actually buys BR movies unless they are on sale? I'm not paying $30 for a movie, every BR movie I've gotten hass been on sale for 15-20, and they have those sales *ALL* the time, like there isn't a time where atleast a couple of major retailer aren't having a deal on BR movies cause that's the only way they sell, $30 is too much, if dvds come out for $15-18 BRs shouldn't be more than $20.

BR may have been boosted by PS3, but moreso, DVD was boosted in a big way by PS2! So this maybe counters the growth argument.

I agree with Evil Fag that BD prices can be a bit too high, especially at MSRP.  When I bought Wall-E on BD, though, it didn't cost much more than the top-of-the-line DVD version and it included everything that had and more.  I think it was maybe a $3 or $4 difference at the most.  I think right now they are just milking the price because they can.  Once they run out of early adopters and the units are being produced in more quantities, prices will definitely come down.  The hardware is coming down faster than DVD hardware did, that's for sure.

I watch movies in HD, and I don't pay $30 to do it. I have no need for physical media when I can download new releases in HD and put them on my USB drive and watch them. Bluray is an interesting medium for games, but the price and size really isnt needed for movies. I actually have a BluRay burner on my desktop, and I have never used it.

I guess that works if you enjoy nasty compression artifacts.  Blu-ray is already very compressed.  Watching downloadable HD stuff is unbearable.

Seriously, you act as if BR vs DVD is like DVD from 2009 vs VHS from 1995. BR vs DVD is like arguing the difference between light green and lime green. Its virtually the same damn thing.
