PS3 doesnt enhance old games - Oct 22, 2006 04:28

The PS2 does a pretty good job of making PS1 games more palatable. Will the PS3 have the same capabilities? Not really.

According to Harrison, unlike how the PS2 would enhance PS1 games with texture smoothing and what not, the PS3 will offer no such visual enhancements (including resolution enhancements) for the previous generation titles. " They are as exactly as they were," said Harrison, who claims Sony preferred to rather deliver them in their original state.

Fair enough: for retro games, it' s really art direction that makes a game age gracefully. Harrison also clarified that eventually they want all their old PS1 games available for download, except for games that were made with licensed talent or tracks where those licenses have expired. Intriguing, I don' t think this will hinder them very much in the end.

I doubt it' ll be a problem. No one buys a next gen system to play their old games.

I only played 2 PSOne games on my PS2 so honestly I could care less if the PS3 enhances old games or not. Hell, I could care less if it was backwards compatible

I expected this really, aren' t they afterall using ps2 chips in it? or was that debunked and i missed it?

And as stated i have not really bought a system to play last gen games... especially if i already own that last gen system (which i do)

Fine by me. I' d be fine if it played PS1 games un-" enhanced" as well. The PS2 really only made PS1 games more blurry, nothing else.

I assume this means that the PS2 can do 240p resolution natively? I never saw 240p on the Xbox1 or 360, and I don' t think the Gamecube can do 240p either.

I' m really disapointed about this. I was looking forward to playing PS2 games at 480p rather than 480i which most PAL games have, hell most PS2 games are 480i only.

After Sony originally stated that PS3 could play PS2 games in 1080p upscaled, there was always the option of 480p also. Now they' ve just gone and screwed it all up.

I still play the old PS2 Tekken and VF games, plus stuff like Time Crisis relatively often so for me it was a great selling point.

There are very few games still to be released on PS2 that i' m actually bothered about. God of War 2 and one or two others. I have a wide selection of PS2 games but i' m not bothered that they won' t be enhancing them, ...a PS2 game in say 720p would not look great and it' d probably make the games look worse, just like American Wasteland on 360.

Does anybody know what PS2 games support 480p+ anyway? Is it only GT4?

Am i going to play PSone games on my PS3? No. I' m going to play them on my PSP instead.

GT4, Tekken 4 & 5, Burnout Revenge, GT4 and a handfull of others. Which is exactly why I was so looking forward to playing some of my favourite games in 480p, as only one that I own in the UK has 480p support and that' s stupid 50hz 576p.

I don' t care at all about upscaling to higher resolutions.

No PS2 games support actual 480p or 16:19, I never thought PS3 could get PS2 games to run in 480p, it would just do the same shit PS2 does and upscale to 480p, but not deliver native 480p.

16:9 mode on PS2 stretches the image, it doesnt fill it the extra spacer with more pixels, it just stretches the pixels to fill your screen, and makes everything look thinner to try to hide the effect but anyone with a good eye can spot it' s fake.

I was considering that but I would have to buy another PS2 and re-buy all of those games again. An easy PS3 solution was far more conveinient, and cheaper overall.

Maybe now I' ll just have to consider that option again.

If it emulates enough of the original PS2 code it can render the games at actual 480p much like 360 renders Xbox games rather than upscaling.

90% of 360 games hade native 480p modes, it isn' t doing any upscaling, thats just the way the games were designed to be rendered.

PC console emulators actually makes them run at higher resolutions rather than the ugly stretching and upscaling consoles do, but then with emulators usually text or the HUD look ugly because they stay low-rez while the graphics dont. I suppsoe it' s possible if they really wanted to work on it to make PS3 emulate PS2 games the way PC emus do, but the compatability problems it would cause would probably not be worth it.

That they do, but only when rendered at a higher resolution. Most PS2 games have assets which can be dispayed in true 480p. Various VGA software hacks have shown this, of course there are a few that don' t. But none of the games I was looking forward to playing.

Yes but 360 actually renders XB1 games in 720p, and downscales most 360 stuff from 720p to 480p hence a more jaggie look to things and the somewhat small text on various games.

I dont think it renders them in 720p, I havent played an Xbox1 game on a 360 in a long time but as far as I remember it upscales to 720p, doesnt make them render 720p natively, which doesn' t look too bad since the original source was 480p not 480i.

All XB1 games are emulated with 360 and the games are actually rendered at 720p and not 480p. When playing them in 480p the 360 downscales them from 720p to 480p, much like it does with 360 games.

All the sprite parts of the graphics such as on screen counters and the like are upscaled to 720p I believe. It' s also why textures don' t appear as clear in 720p mode, whilst all the geometry and effects looks far crisper and nicely anti-aliased without appearing blurry as they are rendered at 720p.

If I was a graphics whore, I wouldn' t like Nintendo nearly as much as I do.

I' d be happy with playing Final Fantasy VII(which I still haven' t managed to complete, thanks to that stupidly powerful underwater thing) or Kingdom Hearts on the PS3(when I am not playing PS3 games, that is), to be honest. Besides, some PS2 games are nice looking enough as they are; such as Resi 4 and Shadow Of The Colossus.
