The voice chat stopped working for me after the update and other people had freezing problems. The 2.40 has indeed been pulled. LOL @ Sony. Hopefully they fix this quick.

I spoke to a friend of mine earlier and he said his messed up after he got the update and turned off his console. He said when he turned his console back on it just went to the main menu and none of the icons came up or anything. He called Sony and they said it needed repaired, but he hung up on them. I' m not sure if he ever called them back, or if there is a way to fix his console without sending it in, but I would assume that Sony would repair the console even if its not under warranty, right?

The update is definately down now. I had heard it bricked some 40GB PS3' s but the 60GB was okay. I have the 60GB but can' t download the update now.

No news from Sony yet as to when it will be back up.

I heard you have to remove your hard drive. Some say its the the custom themes. Sony will repair it for free if it dead due to the firm ware. Don' t worry they will fix it here shortly.

Here' s Sony Official Statement.

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog .

Seems like they rushed it a bit. I know a lot of people were waiting for it, but consumers seriously overhyped what exactly the Trophies did and the other stuff on it. I think people could have waited a bit longer.

Then again I don' t have a PS3 (want one) so can' t really comment on whether it' s affecting me or not.

Thank goodness they didn' t receive an infinite number of calls. Sounds like it' s just limited to a certain finite number.

I have a 40GB PS3 and mine works fine except for the occasional VOIP issue. I don' t have custom themes installed on mine since I am heterosexual.

Didn' t notice anything negative, after my update.
Played SuperStardust HD, to try to get trophy (wich I didn' t manage, lol)..
Then I played Bejing Olympics a few hours, and listened to some music.
And I also noticed that the store is incredible quick.

2.40 also included support for surround MP3' s, I noticed in the changelog, anyone know a good place to buy those?

Cool.. clicked some of the links from 2pac' s link, and finally ended up on:

http://www.all4mp3.com/music/

I see that Bjørn Lynne has remastered some of his music in surround. :)
If there is any Europeans here, wich used to have an Amiga, they probably remember a person who released 100' s of modules under the name of Dr.Awesome. That' s him, I like his music.
Others might remember him as the one who did all the sounds in the Worms-game, Alien Breed 3D, and Colony, since he' s been working for Team 17. :)
I also used to have some of his CDs, but can' t find them anymore.

Going to my PS3 now, to download that Witchwood track, seem to recall that were great in CD-Stereo.. Will be fun hearing it in surround.

Guess I' m kind of lucky that I was too lazy to rush and update my PlayStation 3. I have a Japanese unit so I would have been completely fuxxored had the firmware update screwed up my system as the American arm of SCE probably wouldn' t have wanted to touch the unit.

Under normal circumstances; SCEA fixes japaneese systems, but it don' t fall under the warranty, then you have to pay for the repairs.
If you bought you japaneese system from Play-asia, or something like that, it shouldn' t be a problem returning it to that retailer, and getting it repaired for free, as long as you got your waranty. :)

In this circumstance tough, I think it says in the EULA that if you download system-software from a third party website (not playstation.com).
Sony will not be responsible for the system-software, from different website.
I assume this means that they will repair broken hardware, if your hardware breaks when downloading new system-software at their official sites. :-/

Does your PS3 automatically download new firmware when connected to a network, or does it give you the option to retain your current version?
