I might be making a fan game soon... - Jul 16, 2004 01:58
To be more specific, most likely a Sonic fan game. I have a few ideas for Mario, Star Wars, the Simpsons, and " Calvin and Hobbes" but since Sonic is my VERY favourite game series, I' ll try that first. I' ve posted this thread on other forums but I' d like to add it to this one.

First things first, very important, it will be in 2-D, ok? I know Sonic fan games can work in 3-D (As Sonic Robo Blast 2 proved) but 2-D will be easier to make, it' s hard enough already...

But anyway, I haven' t literally started on it yet... I have many of the ideas in my mind but am just using tutorials with the softwares that I have now... and don' t really have VERY much time to spend making them. (Look, I copied and pasted most of this post from versions I made in other messageboards and added stuff in for this site, of course)

So far, I have only seven level designs that have passed in my mind with more than a 50 grade in my mind, and all those seven are hard to decide between. Actually, I have a few other level ideas too, they just aren' t as complete. I might be motivated sometime to improve them though. I' ll mention them later and add them to the poll. However, I' d like to ask what you' d wanna see in the one-level demo. (That' s right- Only one level in the first demo if I make it and it won' t be as high-quality as the level in the full version if I make the full version and I might not make the full version)

Also, my idea for the controls so far is a two-action-button system with d-pad for directions, and action button 1 will be used like B is in SADX, where you spin dash, but charge up for long enough and you can do a light dash instead. Is that a good control system?

Oh and what would the game be called? I can' t find a very good name, but " The Hedgehog of DOOM" or " The Ultimate Sonic Crossover" are a few of my name ideas for now.

Speaking of the levels, they' re divided up into sub-sections as opposed to acts much like in Sonic Adventure' s Emerald Coast, where, for example, there was Azure Blue World and Windy and Ripply, and the music and scenery changed a bit between the sub-sections (And you entered the second one by going into a viny cave then going across a sandy, rocky area with a waterfall to the right) so rather than acts there will be sub-sections, unless I change my mind between now and the time I make my fan game, but anyway,

Green Coast has a " Nature" mood, and is, unless I change my mind, about equal in difficulty to leaf forest in Sonic Advance 2. It will reference reality, but so far I have no plans to reference other video game series than Sonic or maybe Ecco for that level. (Award: Most basic and pure Sonic fan game level in my mind so far)

Energy flow Systems has a " Futuristic" mood, and is, unless I change my mind, about equal in difficulty to Techno Base in Sonic Advance 2. I have plans to reference pre-song voice tracks from the band " Our Lady Peace" as well as put in strong references to Commander Keen (As the level name suggests) and Sonic Heroes, and an almost unnoticeable reference to a bit of stuff in Sonic comics and Ecco the Dolphin. (Award: Full of the most sudden surprises)

Pyramid of the Hedgehog will have an " Ancient" mood, as the level name suggests, and is, unless I change my mind, about equal in difficulty to Sandopolis Act 2 from Sonic and Knuckles, or probably a little harder. There will be strong references to Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle' s Pyramid levels, as the level name suggests, including some of the monsters and what the doors are used for. O_O It will also have strong references to Sandopolis and Pyramid Cave, as well as the similarities between the two, and might also include references to Ecco the Dolphin. (Award: Full of the most constant high-speed puzzle rooms for missing something)

Gap-bridging fleet will have a " Fighting in the sky" mood, and is, unless I change my mind, about unmatched in difficulty. (At the end) It starts off medium difficulty, about Sky Canyon in Sonic Advance 2 difficullty I guess, then gradually the difficulty goes up and the styles mix tremendously. It will have strong references to mainly my nightmares and some ideas I thought up non-subconciously, but also references to Commander Keen, Sonic Archie, and in terms of story, Ecco the Dolphin, and I might use a few ideas some of my friends might give me, and yet there' s more that I don' t even remember where they come from at the moment. (Award: Used most ideas from dreams, crossovers, self, and other unique ideas in all levels potentially to be used for the demo)

Radical Speedway will have a " Racing" mood, but I haven' t decided the difficulty for even myself yet. It might have references to F-Zero and Streets of Rage, and other ideas I' m not sure where they come from at the moment. (Award: Fastest level in ideas for the fan game)

City of Forever will have an " Underwater" mood, and the difficulty will be about that of Lost World in Sonic Adventure DX... or maybe harder. It will have strong Ecco the Dolphin references, as the level name suggests. (Award: Most misleading level name)

Neo Las Vegas will have a " Casino" mood, but if grinding will work in the Games Factory, might be mostly based on grinding on the thin neon light bars and will have strange boss fights and moves. Oh right and most references will be ones within Sonic or be ideas from a couple of my dreams (Award: Most oddly designed level for the fan game)

Anyway, which level do you want to see in the demo? By the way in case you were wondering the reason I wasn' t being very specific was because I didn' t want to spoil it all for you.

However, some of my ideas include:
1. Grinding in 2-D but the move in Sonic Heroes where the characters jump to speed up will actually be used to jump across small gaps.
2. The swing rope from Sonic and Knuckles in Sandopolis act 2 will actually have to be jumped off of to get onto another swing rope.
3. Lasers and/or bullets flying everywhere EXCEPT for one area, and Sonic has to reach that area, and it will be a different area each firing.
Please bear in mind that most likely, these ideas won' t be used. They might if a level where those ideas fit is chosen, and if I can get them to work in my game making software, but there' s no guarantee. Also, remember that since I posted this on other messageboards, the majority of you aren' t guaranteed to be the majority of everyone I' m polling. Thanks in advance for responding.

By the way, I' m gone to St.John' s for a while. I' m leaving in about an hour and will be gone for a couple days, so I MIGHT not be able to respond to your responses for a while. (Unless the computer in the house I' m visiting is fixed by the time I get there) Also, that means I won' t be able to do anything more with anything related to the fan game (unless thinking counts) until at least when I get back. That doesn' t mean you still can' t respond though, so I' d still appreciate a response.

Which programming language are you going to use to create this monster game? C? C++? C#? etc.?

And when it' s done can you post the entire source code for all of us to view? It should only fill up a few pages of board space! :)

The Ultimate Sonic Crossover

Yeah....anyways... my " 10 year old son" thought your ideas were okay and suggested to go with the title " The Ultimate Sonic Crossover" , because you seem to incorporate so many of the Sonic games.

Actually, I' m using video game making software.

Yeah....anyways... my " 10 year old son" thought your ideas were okay and suggested to go with the title " The Ultimate Sonic Crossover" , because you seem to incorporate so many of the Sonic games.

Yeah, and not just Sonic games either... the Sonic comic books will have their fare share of attention... as well as other, more forgotten video game series like Ecco the Dolphin and Commander Keen... having noticeable reference in most of the levels.

By the way, enough of your " 10 year old son" what are your opinions on it? Or do you not have any comments to make?

Nope!
