A molecule is named after Sonic

According to my friend, who' s studying to become a doctor, there is a molecule that' s named " Sonic Hedgehog" (SHH).
For some reason that' s the official scientific name. The guy who named it apparently likes Sonic.
To me this sounds like a joke but my friend says it' s 100% true.
Funny stuff eh?

Some clinicians and scientists criticise giving genes frivolous or quirky names, calling it inappropriate that patients with " a serious illness or disability are told that they or their child have a mutation in a gene such as Sonic hedgehog.
The first two discovered, desert hedgehog and indian hedgehog, were named for species of hedgehogs, while sonic hedgehog was named after Sega' s video game character Sonic the Hedgehog.
