What are you doing for Christmas & New Year' s Eve/Day? - Dec 04, 2006 04:14
I' m going to be spending both at Lake Louise in Alberta Canada...

The above photo was taken on Nov 11th 2006, and more are available HERE

I' ll mark my 7th visit to Canada and my 3rd Christmas in a foreign country. I' ll be taking tons of photo' s and will take over the Post your Photo thread again upon my return.

I leave on the 20th and get back on the 4th. It' s going to be awesome!

What are you guys doing?

Well, I' ll be working on all of the above. No one in a casino is off on those days, as they are BIG business days. Any one who calls in gets attendance points and suspensions.

Majik, what kind of activities are available there? Doin' any skiing or fishing or something? Or is it just a relaxation trip?

Skiing/Snowboarding, dog sledding, ice skating, ice climbing etc. I haven' t bought my mountain pass yet but i' ll likely buy a 6 day pass and then decide what else i' m doing after that.

I' m definitely going up to the glaciers again, and there are some ice caves i want to see. It' s going to be great!

I wish i worked in a casino though. It has to be one of the coolest jobs ever, right?

Y' know, I can' t complain. I mean, it is a job, which means that some days are better than others.

Pros:

Pays well
Flirting with hot chicks
Most guests are enjoyable to deal with

Cons:

There are only so many games you can deal (gets old after a while)
Ugly chicks flirting with YOU
Drunk and/or obnoxious assholes at your table
Smokers

For a job that doesn' t require a degree, It' s pretty hard to beat.

That vacation sounds f*ckin' sweet, man! I need to do something like that. Are you going with family or friends or both?

Well I love Christmas. Its the one time in the year where I get to see most of my family on my dad' s side. We basically have a family reunion at this time of year and this year we' re all going down to one persons house (not sure how she relates to me exactely). I have to say it' s extremely refreshing to see this side of the family, they are much more intelligent than my moms side they' re English as opposed to french speaking and they don' t smoke. It' s pretty tame though, not enough drinking in my opinion. On the other hand I' m usually too hung over to drink much by Christmas day anyway.

New Years is spent with my immediate family and this year it will only be my mom and my brother(s) and I think the name of the game is to see how much alcohol you can consume in 48 hours. I' ll be breaking out the Jack Daniel' s.

Canada within itself can be as different as Europe is to America. Christmas in Quebec is different than it is in Alberta for example. For one thing in Quebec everyone gets drunk, and the food and music is also very different. Most of Canada is very similar to the states except for the Territiories and Quebec Which is a cross between the rest of Canada and France (I don' t know what the Territiories do). With exception to the music which is largely french (at least in my french family) Quebec celebrates Christmas in a way that I like the most. We party basically from the 24th to the 26th. Even though I always miss it as I' m in Ontario with my Dads side I' m still hung over just from the 24th. By the time I recover from that, its New Years and I' m back in Quebec. New Years in Quebec is a game. The rules are to drink enough to pass out and forget the previous year but not enough to die. I' m getting pretty good at the game.

Nothing you need to know except go easy on the eggnog. The stuff is deceptively sweet and it is usually contains more alcohol than you might think. And trust me if you drink too much of that stuff you will be sick like you have never been, you' ll puke like a dog until new years.

Eggnog is an alcoholic drink with milk, raw eggs, sugar, wipping cream, and ofcourse alcohol (often whisky). Sometimes with nutmeg as well. I don' t like the stuff myself, personally it seems obvious to me why people only drink it once a year. No one will expect you to drink it, and i recommend you don' t. I' d much rather drink the Whisky straight.

Ginjirou is really hoping that the PS3 does well. Right now it' s garbage.

I mean, I don' t give a damn whether the thing is the next savior of human kind or whether it tanks, but right now...

Outlook: Not so good

Actually, it would be better for the high-def dvd market if one format or the other fails quickly. I like the fact that Sony is trying to get the most technically advanced format to market, but with their track record, well...

Outlook: Grim

I c, well even I wouldn' t kill myself over a videogame console....with regards to the PS3 I would say the outlook for the next 2-3 years isn' t good but after that it will shine. In the meantime do what everyone else is doing and pick up a Wii or 360.

That' s what I' m sayin' ! Show me the games, baby! Hopefully DMC and MGS turn out to be all they say. Oh yeah, Killzone too. And after reading the review of Motorstorm I kinda wanna see the finished product there, as well.

You don' t have Nog in the UK??? Huh, go figure. Before you go on a total binge on the stuff, see if there' s non-alcoholic nog there, because unless you really really like the flavor, getting hammered on nog is like smoking 10pounds of copier paper and a pinchfull of Marijuana. You' ll get full before you get toasted.

Seriously, it' s got more calories than a deep-fried chicken milkshake. Don' t let that put you off the stuff though, it' s actually quite good as a treat.

What am I doing for Christmas Eve? A pleasant gathering with my Dad' s Welsh side of the family over my house. I might even try to explain Videogames to my grandfather. He' s an amazing man, and he says he' s too old to learn this stuff, but I bet if I put him in front of a Wii...

What am I doing for Christmas Day? Spending time at the " Annual Midwest Polish Dysfunctionality Contest" ... AKA... The other side of the family. Alone, we' re all nice people, but throw us in a brightly-lit, festive-looking, great-smelling cozy kitchen with family and friends, and it can get pretty ugly. I think there' s a reason my relatives houses are always extra cheery-looking this time of the year.

Several years ago a friend of mine and I started a tradition of hanging out in New Orleans, his hometown, for New Year' s. It' s great because we can briefly check out the tourist madness that occurs there in the French Quarter, but then retreat to some very cool areas that only the locals know about.

Ever since Katrina it' s more important than ever for me to continue visiting there... not only to really understand the scope of the devastation that' s occurred, but also to make some contribution to the local economy as they struggle to recover.

Speaking of snow.... The weather is doing some pretty fucked up shit this winter. I live in Quebec/Canada one of the places in the world in which it snows the most. Usually it starts to snow in November and by this time we sometimes have it up to out knees and by January/Feburary we can have blizzards that bury cars.
At this time of year this is a typical sight in the morning:
http://www.psia-nw.org/images/Images/V%20The%20Results%20of%202%20Days%20Snowfall%20@%20Condo.JPG

By January there is 4 to 8 times more snow than what you see in the picture.

This year I see no snow where I live. It looks like this will be my first Christmas without snow. I mean wtf?! Vancouver gets snow but not Quebec, shit it even snowed in Texas, TEXAS! Not that I' m complaining because this makes traveling easier. The reason I bring this up is to share an amusing anecdote.

Which is this: The other day as I' m walking along one of our main streets as I was waking to the store I see a place that had snow for sale. It was a pile of snow outside with a sign on it saying " for sale" LOL

It' s somewhat of an inside joke but anyone who gets as much snow as i do during winter might find this pretty funny.

Yeah, I know, we' re pretty much in the same bucket of crap, being (in the worldly sake) pretty darn close. Only a couple hundred miles or so I think. It' s insane not having snow on the ground now, I miss my snowboard, & I' m seriously envious of Majik right now.
