Need help with Windows -can' t delete files - Nov 17, 2006 23:36
Some videofiles that I download cannot be deleted. When I try to delete them it says that the file is being used by another person or program, which it' s not of course.
The files slow down my whole computer. I' ve checked for viruses and spy-ware/ad-ware but nothing has been detected.
I have Windows XP Home Edition

How do I solve this?

I' ve heard of others having the same problem and they were recommended some kind of deleter software but I don' t know anything about that stuff so I was hoping maybe one of you guys knew anything...

I appreciate any idea that might help.

Hehe of course
No it' s a little of everything, funny videos, documentaries stuff that doesn' t work (?), music-videos, UFC fights, you know... videos.
You think it' s the files that are causing the problem or is my PC or Windows just f***ed up?
I didn' t have any similar problems at all with my old PC (Windows ME) but this one (XP) got problems immediately.
I blame Windows....

Try starting up in safe mode and deleting them. I think you just push F5 or one of those f keys when your computer is starting up.

If that doesn' t work there are other ways but they are a bit more complicated.

If you ctl+alt delete to bring up the task manager you can see the programs that are running. If you find the proccesses associated (end them) with the files you want to get rid of you should be able to delete them.

It seems to me like you have spyware or malware on your computer. Without a good spyware killer like " spysweeper" you' re bound to have some serious problems if you go to dirty sites. The internet is like high school, if you fuck with all the sites without protection you' re going to catch a virus.

MoveOnBoot will sort you out. It' ll let you move, copy or delete files before Windows can lock or alter them during startup and the changes are made to your hard drive before Windows starts. It' s pretty badass and it' s free too!

It' ll require a restart of your system after you give MoveOnBoot its instructions. It' s pretty easy and should spare you from having to use DOS (which i can help you with if need be) or access the registry.

Run the program and then...

A - Locate the name of the file that is causing your problems.

B - Decide if you want to copy, move or delete the file.

C - Choose a destination for moving the file, or a new file name for the rename option (you won' t get the option if you are deleting it).

Thanks everyone.
I found a weird solution to delete the files. By restarting my computer and moving everything I wanted to keep out of the folder with the " cursed" files I could simply delete the whole folder. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn' t.
But at least I managed to delete the damned files.
But I' ll probably use your tricks and programs next time because it was a pain in the ass to do it my way.
I still blame Windows XP though. I had the same files on my old PC that had Windows Me and they worked fine on that one.
Windows XP always previews files and stuff. Maybe that was what stopped me from deleting the files.

I dunno, didn' t think about it. It was probably several file types. Does it make a difference what file type it is?

No, but AVI' s and particulary DivX AVI' s don' t get along with XP in general. When i find i can' t delete a video it' s usually an AVI. MoveOnBoot gets rid of them though.

Sometimes it is Windows itself (explorer in task manager) that is the guilty process using the file, since it brings a thumbnail of the video and displays meta data about it. They need to fix this in Vista or so help me god.

Windows itself eh? That sounds very likely.
Is there any way to turn the thumbnails and that stuff off?
