TDK shows off 200 GB Blu-ray disc - Sep 03, 2006 07:24
Blue Ray is here

Codeing Info

Garden City (NY) - TDK has announced a prototype Blu-ray disc that can store a massive 200 GB of data. The single-sided, six layer disc can store up to 18 hours of high definition video. TDK also said lower capacity 50 GB discs will start selling next week.

The 200 GB disc will be protected by a hard coating called DURABIS2. The coating stands up to the industry' s steel wool rubbing test and resists dust, scratches and fingerprints. More information about the coating can be seen here.
The 50 GB discs are available in write-once and rewritable formats. TDK claims that the discs can last more than 50 years and have no performance degradation after being overwritten 10,000 times.

The write-once 50 GB Blu-ray discs will sell for around $45 each, while the re-recordable discs will sell for around $60 each.

You won' t see discs this size released commercially for quite a while as there are no drives capable of reading a 4 layer disc yet.

This topic also belongs in ' Everything Else' due to it having nothing to do with games.

and will ps3 be able to read this ' 200Gb' disc if it is ever made?

I see no real point in having such a large disc.
Change is inevitable. Except from a vending machine.

There' s IS definately a need for discs this large but we won' t be able to buy them for ages yet.

As i said there are no commercial drives capable of reading a 4 layer Blu-Ray disc yet.

No.

Theoretically a disc this size would allow for data on the disc being completely uncompressed. That way it could be accessed quicker and loading times could be reduced. Other than that, there' s no use for games.

Who said those discs where for the PS3? Those discs will probably be used in newer versions of Blu-ray players or PC' s.
Games will not benefit from it but a next, next-gen Blu-ray player could have the entire Star Wars trilogy in HD on one disc. As expensive as that disc might be, it will probably be cheaper than buyin six separate DVD' s. Maybe...

Sound' s nice. It' s good to know we have a physical format for movies in resolutions up to 16000x9000 :)

Maybe there will be some cool devices that let you record all your DVD collection on this one disc and play in your player.

There are so many cool ways we could use this thing...

That' s why they have special protective layer.I think they shoul make games and movies in plastic casec like Minidisc for protection - that should solve any problems with scratching your CDs and DVDs.
