Whats on the News! - Apr 17, 2008 18:20
We all leave a bit far from eachother, and local news is bound to not be the same.

Today the hot story in denmark is about:

A 5 year old boy getting kidnapped yesterday from his kindergarden 3 masked men grabed him from his mothers arms and sped of in black car.

The boys family is rich so its suspected its a ransome kidnapping, though its hard to tell yet. I never heard of a ransome kidnapping in denmark before.

Mark Speight, from the popular british art show " SMart" , was recently found dead after hanging himself over depression of his wife' s death.

He was the best artist out of the SMart team as well.

R.I.P Mark.

Marink is that really the best piece of british news. Why not pick up on the story of the 15 year old who ' fake' sneezed and then pretended to wipe his hand down David Cameron' s (Conservative party leader in the UK.) back, he got a police caution for doing it.....I bet if it was an immigrant they would have gotten away with it scott free!!!!

Probably not the most important but was great to see the re-built Vulcan bomber take to the skies again; for a plane that first flew in 1953 still one of the most awesome sounds and sights in the sky.

RCMP in Kimmirut, Nunavut, continue to talk with an armed man in a standoff that began its third day on Thursday.

Police in the community, located 120 kilometres south of Iqaluit, say they are continuing to negotiate with the man and trying to resolve the situation.

The standoff began Tuesday morning, when the 25-year-old man barricaded himself in his home.

Police have said little about the situation and have not released the man' s name.

Extra officers were flown into the community Wednesday to provide assistance at the scene.

It' s okay Canada. It' ll turn out to be a drunk shooting birds with an air rifle. Trust me.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two women walking their dogs Wednesday morning in Ann Arbor' s Eberwhite Woods discovered what they first had thought was smoldering wood, but turned out to be a man on fire, police said.

Police do not know whether the adult male had set himself on fire, but he was in critical condition when he was first found. He was transported to the hospital, where he died.

Later, police said they do not believe the death was a homicide.

Actually its surprising how similar news is across the world. My pet hate at the moment is little kids getting kidnapped and then having all this controversy afterwards about the kids own parents being involved.

Shannon Matthews was the last little girl for this to happen to, now her mother and relatives are being put to trial. I pretty sure that Madelaine McCann' s parents were somehow responsible for their daughters disappearance, since they wouldn' t shut the hell up about it.

If my kid went missing I wouldn' t want it splashed across national and european media. I certainly wouldn' t sell them stories about it.

People can' t seem to get enough about little kids getting kidnapped or killed.

Some children died the other day
We fed machines and then we prayed
Puked up and down in morbid faith
You should have seen the ratings that day

http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/apr/17/attack-threat-lead-to-arrests-of-southwind/

Two Southwind Middle School students were arrested this week -- one for assaulting a teacher, the other for sending threatening messages over the Internet to a fellow student.

On Wednesday, an eighth-grade girl was arrested at the southeast Shelby County school for hitting a teacher.

In a separate incident Monday, an eighth-grade boy was arrested and charged with intimidation for posting threats on a MySpace Web page against another student who had been assaulted at the school last week.

The victim was taken to Le Bonheur Children' s Medical Center.

His attackers -- two 14-year-old boys, a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy -- were arrested and charged with assault, Shular said.

A man has admitted robbing a taxi driver at knife point and making his getaway in the car of an off-duty policewoman who stopped to help.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Colin Smart,33, had robbed Paul Townsend as he was driven around East Kilbride.

Mr Townsend flagged down off-duty police officer Fiona Campbell for help, but Smart then stole her car.

Mr Townsend and Ms Campbell then followed Smart in the taxi and found he had crashed the stolen vehicle.

He was found in pool of blood with the knife beside him. Ms Campbell removed the knife and called the police.

The court heard that Smart, who suffered pelvic injuries in the smash, was in hospital for several weeks recovering.

Smart admitted assaulting Mr Townsend by presenting a knife at him, demanding money, robbing him of £370 and attempting to steal his car.

He also plead guilty to assaulting Ms Campbell by demanding she leave her car and robbing her of it.

Ransom notes come all the time with kidnappings where I live. Even when a poor kid gets kidnapped. Its usually how they get caught too.

As for news in my area, the only thing slightly interesting is about the whole Virginia Tech shooting annaversery on the 16th. I live about 30 miles away from tech, and a zoo that lives 20 miles away from me(in the opposite direction) decided to cut off this gigantic star they have on the 16th, so tech students got pissed and decided to stand outside alllllll night and shine their flashlights at the star. I' m sorry, but I don' t know whats dumber, the fact that the zoo cut off the star, or the fact that the students stood outside all damn night.

Also, they got pretty mad when someone posted these two pics on the VA Tech forums. They even put them in the news.

Yeah it was a rasom case, the police got the kid and arrested the idiots behind it! I wonder who thinks its worth 7 years of your life for a stunt like that.

Mostly when a kid goes missing here for real, they are found dead not so long after.

No UK license to kill, but maybe a DR license to steal
Torrijos was an undisclosed foreign agent during his 2004 campaign
by Eric Jackson, largely from other media
Even though part of the next James Bond movie has been filmed in Panama, it does not appear that President Torrijos has achieved the status of double-aught spy. It seems he has never been issued a license to kill by Her Majesty' s Secret Service.
However, if we are to believe campaign rhetoric coming out of Santo Domingo and documents that have come to light in the Dominican and Panamanian press and draw rational inferences from a slew of admissions and conflicting statements, Martín Torrijos may have been issued a license to steal by the Dominican Republic' s Ministry of Public Works.
The president' s relationship with the DR administration of ex-president Hipólito Mejía began in 2001 and ended shortly after Torrijos was elected in 2004, and was carried on through a company called Constructores y Consultores SA, 60 percent of which was owned by former Torrijos administration Minister of the Presidency Ubaldino Real and 40 percent by Martín Torrijos. Constructores y Consultores formed a consortium with a Dominican company and received $300,000 per year from the Dominican Ministry of Public Works, then headed by one Miguel Vargas Maldonado, who is now the opposition presidential challenger to the DR' s incumbent President Leonel Fernández.

That' s our president for you. Panama is where my home is. As far as my home country of Spain:

The case was stolen from a parked car on Tuesday.
The case containing two low activity radioactive isotopes which went missing from the boot of a parked car in Mostoles, Madrid earlier in the week has been found intact. The case was found this morning at the entrance to the Giner de lo Ríos college in the dormitory town of Leganés.

Detroit, Michigan. US Nazi Headquarters.

Detroit may now be headquarters to the largest Nazi organization in the United States. The Web site for the National Socialist Movement claims that its headquarters ha moved from Minneapolis to Detroit to get closer to the " problem," which to them means a more racially diverse community. The site also shows a Detroit P.O. Box.

A message on the group' s hot line says: " Currently with the so-called political correctness, white Americans no longer have any mainstream champions in Washington D.C. That all changes today."

It appears the group wants to grow in Detroit and recruit members.

" The group hates immigrants, African Americans, gay people and Jews, but don' t panic just because NSM is now based in Detroit," said Betsy Kellman of the Anti-Defamation League, which tracks hate groups. " It doesn' t mean the members will become more visible. We know that the the Internet is available to anyone anywhere and it doesn' t matter physically where they' re located."

The National Socialist Movement marched in Lansing last year, and it' s planning marches in Michigan this summer.

Edit: Better yet.

" Legislation passed Wednesday will require Ontario schools to drop trans fat from school cafeterias, vending machines and tuck shops.

Foods that naturally contain small amounts of trans fat, such as beef and milk, will be allowed.

Trans fats, often found in french fries and other fast-food cafeteria staples, are being targeted around the world by advocates of healthy eating, who say the processed oil contributes to a host of health problems, including childhood obesity.

Chocolate bars, potato chips and soft drinks had already been banned from Ontario' s elementary schools.

The legislation enshrines that policy in law and will eventually expand the junk food ban to include high schools.

The Education Ministry says the province will also look at establishing nutrition standards for foods available in schools.

" It' s clear that we are moving in a healthier direction by dropping trans fat from schools," said Education Minister Kathleen Wynne.

" Giving students healthier options will help them stay healthy and have more energy for learning." "

This is an example of real news. People killing eachother is not news, that' s not progress. That' s just another day on this shit hole planet. I' ve been saying for years that they need to have better legislation to remove the trash we have kids eating at school. Everyone should do this.

Latest important news from Kent, England

Two men who swam in the sea with a dolphin after a night out have been found guilty of harassing the animal.

Michael Jukes, 27, and Daniel Buck, 26, were found guilty of intentionally or recklessly disturbing a wild animal at Sandgate, Kent in June last year.

Dover magistrates heard they had touched and stroked Dave the dolphin, which had become a tourist attraction spotted regularly near Folkestone.

They were each ordered to carry out 120 hours community service.

Euro-whiff invades England

A vile stench that has invaded southern England has been blamed on industrial and farming smells from across the Channel.

Dubbed " Euro-whiff" by the Met Office, the source of the odour is currently being probed.

Sarah Holland from the Met Office said it has received many calls from members of the public.

The smell has been detected as far west as Devon.

" Basically, over the last few days, we' ve had fresh, strong winds from an easterly direction," said Miss Holland. " As a result some of our air is coming from continental Europe."

Miss Holland added that while members of Met Office staff were attempting to trace the exact source of the " atmospheric aroma" , the likely explanation was most likely agricultural or industrial works in western Europe.

" Normally, our winds are westerly, coming off the Atlantic Ocean, which bring little or no pollution with them."

Some of the most pungent odours have been reported in the Reading area, with other reports of a stench in East Anglia.

One Surrey resident told MSN News today she noticed the stench as soon as he stepped out the door this morning.

" It was horrible," she said of the air. " This nasty stench just hit me."

Thames Water say the smell is not related to water or sewage works.

I think we can all relate to this:

Gas prices have jumped again, surpassing the $1.20 a litre mark in most major cities across Canada.

According to Gasbuddy.com, prices in Quebec City are hovering around $129.5 a litre. In Victoria, prices are about $1.24 a litre.

In southern Ontario, in cities like Toronto and Hamilton, prices at the pump are averaging about $1.20 a litre.

Prices are even higher in northern Ontario cities.

Gas stations in the Halifax area are showing prices in the $1.28 a litre range while some stations in Winnipeg and Vancouver have prices of about $1.26 a litre, reports The Canadian Press.

Gas prices are above the $1.20 mark in Calgary, Regina, P.E.I. and Winnipeg.

Edmonton, in comparison to other major Canadian cities, appears to have the lowest price, $118.9 cents a litre.

Dave Collins, the owner of an independent filling station in Halifax told CTV Atlantic " it' s going to be a miserable summer for everybody."

" It' s really simple because we have the second highest tax regime. Only Newfoundland has higher taxes than we do. Nova Scotia is a very high road tax environment."

Diana Whalen, a Liberal MLA in Nova Scotia, agreed provincial taxes have a lot to do with the high prices in her province.

" Our party has been calling for a 4 per cent cut to the fuel tax which is the tax on every litre of gasoline. We' ve been saying that for quite a few months now and the prices at this point in time are showing we' re really not competitive with the other provinces."

The high prices have people across Canada grimacing at the pumps.

" People are frustrated by the high gas prices and bracing for $1.40 to $1.50 per litre this summer across the country," Jason Toews, co-founder of Gasbuddy.com, told CTV Newsnet on Friday. " It' s going to be a tough summer."

Liberal MP Dan McTeague is accusing refiners of taking advantage of consumers and said market fundamentals do not support the rising prices.

He told CTV' s Mike Duffy Live that refineries, the oil industry and the four major oil companies in Eastern Canada are taking advantage of consumers.

He said the only solution is to build more oil refineries, and for the federal government to toughen the Competition Act to ensure prices are fair. Though he said the feds don' t have the authority to regulate gas prices.

McTeague said he expects much of the next week explaining to his constituents why prices are so high.

" A lot of people are at the breaking point and I suspect it' s going to be very hard for a lot of us to explain exactly how we got here, but there' s no doubt this is going to cause enormous pain for just about everybody."

New Democrat finance critic Judy Wasylycia-Leis, agreed it will be a prime topic for discussion while Parliament takes a break next week.

" I think they' re going to be pretty upset their price of gas keeps going up at the same time the government is giving another $1.5 billion in subsidies to the oil sands, to the big gas companies, the big developers, and yet nothing is being done to protect consumers," she told Mike Duffy Live.

But Conservative MP Rick Dykstra said the government has taken big steps -- lowering the GST by two per cent, putting money towards renewable energies and alternative fuels, helping out the provinces and offering tax credits for bus passes.

" We think we' re trying to balance the needs of individuals and the economy with ensuring we' re working towards fighting greenhouse gas emissions and lowering them and being responsible with our country' s dollars," Dykstra said.

Edward Jones analyst Lanny Pendill said Thursday that pump prices have not even come close to catching up with refiners' soaring costs.

" The net impact has been the profitability at the refineries has declined significantly from last year' s levels,' ' he said.

" The refiner, in essence, is absorbing some of that cost increase of oil.' '

BNN' s Linda Sims reported an ease in crude oil prices Friday. Still, she said prices remained above US$114 a barrel.

Steve in Fredericton
NO KIDDING MARKET FUNDAMENTALS DON' T SUPPORT THE RISING PRICES! We' ve (the general public) have been saying that for years.

Why is it that the largest un-tapped oil reserve in the world is Saudi Arabia (they' re all driving Mercedes and living like kings) and the world' s second largest is Canada (we' re paying $1.20 per litre and boardering on mass poverty)!?

Time we started refining our own oil to cheaply supply the Canadian market.

Man, its about £1.20 in the UK, which is what $2.42 in Canada? Still can' t believe 76p of that £1.20 is on tax alone! I know the government has to maintain the country' s transport links, but when the tax is over half the total cost its ridiculous.

Its not like I can just stop driving though in order to boycott this.

A man posing as Darth Vader attacked a Star Wars fan, who had founded a Jedi Church, a court has heard.

Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27, from Holyhead, Anglesey, admitted assaulting Barney Jones and cousin Michael with a metal crutch. They suffered minor injuries.

Hughes, who was drunk and dressed in a black bin bag, shouted " Darth Vader!"

Earlier, when Hughes failed to arrive on time, District Judge Andrew Shaw issued an arrest warrant, adding: " I hope the force will soon be with him."

On the front page today in denmark´:

A young man did some robberies, and raped his ex girlfriend, since he was an immigrant from Iran, his parents lied him younger so they would get more money in child support from the goverment.

On the papers he was under 15, so he cant be prosecuted in anyway for the crimes he commits, but the girl he raped told the police he was 17, so they did a dental exam and he is older than 15.

So he can look forward to a prison sentence and maybe a one way ticket to Iran.

For nearly two years, James Rhoades, a university librarian in Tallahassee, has been fighting to establish in law what science and fact already have shown beyond any doubt: He is the biological father of the boy dubbed J.A.R. He' s got DNA tests to prove it, and videos and loads of pictures of him with the boy. In the photos too are the boy' s mother, J.N.R., whom Rhoades met while taking an online graduate course. She was — and still is — married to another man, who was stationed at a Pensacola Air Force base during their affair in 2005.

Last week, in a decision that underscores the tense relationship between science and law, a divided Kentucky Supreme Court told Rhoades that he could not press his paternity claim, no matter what evidence of fatherhood he might have, because J.N.R. was, and remains, a married woman. When it comes to defining fatherhood in the Bluegrass State, where Ricketts and her husband now live, the marital " I do" mean a lot more than DNA.

Ridiculous.

They give the husband more rights than the father. This was the SUPREME COURT TOO! WTF!?

The laws protecting marriage from an outsider challenging praternity are clearly outdated and need to be changed. Human stupidity.

might be so, but its probably because the rules of god are more important than science, and bastards arent seen in a good light in the bible.
