NPD Figures for Dec. 2007 - Jan 18, 2008 10:32
Figures are for Dec. 2007; all of 2007; platform' s life-to-date. As always, these are for North America only.

1. Nintendo DS 2.47 million 8.50 million 17.65 million
2. Wii 1.35 million 6.29 million 7.38 million
3. Xbox 360 1.26 million 4.62 million 9.15 million
4. PlayStation 2 1.1 million 3.97 million 41.12 million
5. PSP 1.06 million 3.82 million 10.47 million
6. PlayStation 3 797.6 K 2.56 million 3.25 million

Says Wired.

" I' ve been asked a lot if PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware sales were likely to benefit from the scarce supply of Wii' s at retail," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier in a statement today. " Since hardware sales are most influenced by the kinds of games a consumer wants to play, and it would appear that the PS2 was a more likely ' substitute choice' in that scenario," she said.

It' s interesting that this takes into account the full effect of the PS3' s mid-November price drop, but the most notable numbers to me are that the 360 got very close to matching the Wii in sales.

It really has to be disappointing for Sony that they are some way behind the 360 and DS still. Also interesting that none of the selling games are ps3 ones. So how does Sony convert all those ps2 owners into ps3 ones (apart from price)?

All in all Nintendo are laughing all the way to the bank.

If Sony had of made the PS3 back compat with PS2 games then that might of helped, why would you want to pieces of equipment to play games? It' s like having 2 PC' s one to play pre vista games and one to play vista games. Sony screwed up on that side of things and they missed the chance to take Next gen by the bollocks.

Yeah, it' d be like having a DX10 Vista PC that didn' t play older games properly...

Wait for the January figures. December' s relatively big, but November' s bigger, and there' s a surplus of money and unwanted games stuff after the holidays, which turns into trade-in' s & purchases.

I really don' t know what all the fuss is about with Vista. Mine runs great. It' s far more stable than XP ever was. It runs smoothly and has handled every program I' ve installed on it with ease. That includes old games. StarCraft works, FEAR works, C&C Tiberium Wars works... Some of those are really old games too. I don' t see what people keep complaining about.

Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 were two pretty big ones. I can' t say whether they' ve been resolved or not though.

January won' t be bad but don' t expect it to be a patch on November and December. They' re the two biggest months in this industry, closely followed by September and March.

As for Vista, it' s a pain in the ass. Not so much with games as many of the early issues have been worked out, but with video codecs and stuff...[:' (]

Does anybody know whether it' s worth updating to the service pack 1 beta?

We turn our computers on. I might be upgrading my CPU/mobo/ram in a few months and my copy of Vista is OEM. Meaning it' s tied to my motherboard. I' ll have to buy another copy and I' m seriously considering going back to XP. People talk about lower games sales for PC, piracy is part of it, so are consoles but the other piece of the puzzle is Vista. The thing is so buggy that people are just giving up with it. Vista is the biggest technological *** up since the hindenburg.

RE: NPD Figures for Dec. 2007 - Jan 21, 2008 00:53

Following the release of the latest NPD sales information for the US market' s 2007 performance, all three console manufacturers have released statements highlighting their own achievements.

Unsurprisingly they' ve each adapted the data to emphasise their own particular achievements, with Nintendo focusing on units shifted, Microsoft looking at total money spent, and Sony noting that its own sales were up significantly.

More specifically, Nintendo' s headline statistics lead with the fact that it can boast the best-selling two platforms in the US last year - the DS sold 8.5 million units, while the Wii sold 6.3 million.

The company also noted that it was responsible for 52 per cent of all videogame hardware sold across the year, which was of course more than the other manufacturers combined, and that half of the top 30 best-selling software titles were made for Nintendo platforms.

Microsoft on the other hand was able to boast another top statistic - that the Xbox 360 garnered more consumer spend than any other console, a result of higher price points and arguably a greater number of key software events.

The Xbox 360 prompted USD 4.8 billion in total consumer spending, compared to USD 3.5 billion on the Wii and USD 2.2 billion on the PlayStation 3.

Additionally Microsoft was keen to ram home the point that it was widening the gap between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and noted that its console has outsold Sony' s by an average of 2-to-1 since the PS3' s launch in 2006.

And its software sales were also strong, with Halo 3 the top-selling title shifting 4.8 million units since launch in September, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the most popular game in December, selling 1.5 million units in that month.

Sony meanwhile was gearing up for 2008, and therefore keen to ignore the performance of its rivals - in fact its release was the only one of the three not to mention the other two.

The leading paragraph of the statement was dedicated to underlining the improvement in sales performance for the PlayStation 3, which - with the help of a price cut - meant that December 2007 was the best-performing month for the console to date, with 798,000 units sold.

That, combined with some key upcoming titles - including Metal Gear Solid 4 and Devil May Cry 4 - as well as the recent trend towards Blu-ray as the Hollywood studio next-gen DVD format of choice, makes for a promising outlook.

That said, Sony also noted that the PlayStation 2 is my no means dead, and it sold the most software units of any console in the US in December, as well as outselling its big brother and shifting 1.1 million hardware units.

Incorrect. Reinstall it on the new machine and ring up windows activation. Tell them your motherboard was faulty and had to be replaced. They cannot force you to buy another copy in that situation. I did it and I was on the phone for a total of 5 mins.

Yeah, I forgot about that. I' ll try it. Microsoft is lucky I paid for Vista the first time. Thx

In any case, I still have 30 days to activate my account once I make the mobo swap?

Yeah, other than the mobo thing, everything else is the same as XP activation.
