Blade Runner: The Final Cut - Dec 30, 2007 22:44
This was really cool, seeing Blade Runner on the big screen after only watching it on video in various forms over the years. Although I haven' t watched it enough times to tell you specifically what has been changed in the latest version... maybe slight variations in the arrangement of certain shots. And I heard something about Deckerd' s dream sequence being re-shot, although it looked pretty close to the original one to me.

Blade Runner is a great film, no doubt, and it' s amazing how fully-realized and beautifully designed its world is. But there are flaws which weren' t fixed in this version. The most obvious flaw to me has always had to do with the video footage of Leon killing the person who' s administering the test on him, which Deckerd repeatedly views in the early part of the film. Each subsequent time that Deckerd views this footage, they (the director/editors of Blade Runner) use different takes of the test. So the actors are using different timing and intonation on their lines. (Leon' s line " My mother? Let me tell you about my mother..." becomes " My mother -- I' ll tell ya about my mother!!" ) It' s obvious to me, and really unrealistic. Since it hasn' t been fixed through multiple re-cuts, I can only assume that director Ridley Scott has some sort of explanation for it, but I' ve never heard it.

Also, it' s never made sense to me why Harrison Ford chose to use a ridiculous voice when talking to Zhora. Obviously they can' t go back and change that very well. It just seems totally random and out of character for him.

But overall, it' s such an impressive and beautifully designed film. At once outrageously inventive but also restrained, subtle and patient in its presentation. And it' s cool seeing, as an historical footnote, how at the time it was made, it was entirely possible that 37 years into the future, Atari would still be a major technological/commercial presence.

Blade Runner is THE Noir flick. Fuck The Maltese Falcon, ...fuck The Postman Always Rings Twice, fuck Gattaca, fuck Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and Se7en... Blade Runner is not only the best Noir film ever made, it' s also one of the best films ever made, ever.

Blade Runner is easily my favourite film of all time. Fords best performance and Ridley Scotts finest work.

Without Blade Runner there would probably have been no Ghost in the shell, The Matrix or even Sin City.

Seriously, it' s a great film and should be advanced up near the top of anyone' s lists who hasn' t seen it yet.

I just saw it, it was good, I guess.... I don' t see what all the fuss is about. It would have been pretty sweet back in 1982, but there are a lot of better sci-fi movies out now.
