The History of Panzer Dragoon - Apr 17, 2008 02:58
Gamasutra is presenting this overview of the Panzer Dragoon series. It' s a decent read if you' re not already very familiar with the games. I would have preferred a lot more behind-the-scenes info, but it' s worth checking out.

I probably sound like a noob for asking this but what genre was Panzer Dragoon? I heard so many great things about the series.

They were mostly shooters on rails, with branching pathways in many of the levels. There was one RPG in the series that allowed for free exploration, though.

Orta was quite good IMO, graphically one of the best titles on Xbox too.. But i was disappointed by it, simply because i was expecting a RPG rather than a rails Shooter.

Why would you expect it to be an RPG?

I can agree the visuals were great but gameplay wise it was just sad. There was no use for the form changes. I only switched my forms for two bosses. Other than that I just sat there shooting at things that flew by for three hours and then it was over. If I would have spent money on a game with the depth of a puddle that lasted only three hours I would have flipped.

Because of Saga and how awesome that was, ild thought it' ll make sense if the Xbox game followed it up..

It came during a time where i was really busy doing other things and gaming was not high on my agenda.. So i basically missed most of its previews and reviews and got the game late when i had more time to game.

I found the form changing quite useful... actually it didn' t occur to me to try playing without doing it. The art direction was pretty mindblowing too.

Let me guess, you like the gameplay in Rez, right?

Yes, as a $5 Live title that I play for a day and throw away.

I think there' s a philosophical element to Rez which might have gone unnoticed there, buddy.

Played them all, the original Panzer Dragoon is still my favorite of the series. I used to get goose bumps just watching the fabulous intro, and I' m sure if I loaded up the PS2 remake I' d still get goose bumps watching the intro :D

Plus the original had way better music than the rest of the games in the series and the gameplay was the most arcadey.

If that' s in reference to me liking Rez I pointed out that it' s a $5 downloadable game, not a full priced title like PDO was. If PDO would have came out on Live as an $5 XBLA title its short lifespan and basic gameplay mechanics would have been somewhat redeemable. I was expecting a lot more from PDO when I played it.

Because he' s a dumbass who likes to act like he knows something about videogames.

And I liked Orta.
