Some Blu-Ray and HD-DVD recommendations? - Feb 06, 2009 01:08
I decided to pick up the HD-DVD player for the 360 (39.99) and take advantage of some of the cheap movies available($3-5 with free shipping? Fuck yeah). I also got a PS3 so I'm set on both fronts. I been grabbing up movies left and right that I either didnt have in my DVD collection or just screamed "watch in hi-def". So far I got:
Blu-Ray
Live Free or Die Hard
Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Wanted
L.A. Confidential
The Departed
Transformers
Iron Man
The Dark Knight
Face Off
A Clockwork Orange
Spider Man 3
Pan's Labyrinth

HD-DVD
Casino
The Bourne Identity
Red Dragon
Dawn of the Dead
Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind

So any suggestions to add in to this list? I'm considering 2001 A space Odyssey and Casablanca as I'm told they did an amazing job with the transfers. I been using www.hidefdigest.com 's reviews for the most part. But just curious as to anyone's opinion here.

You don't have Planet Earth?  What's wrong with you?

Disney movies in general have excellent transfers, naturally the older ones aren't as pretty.  I have "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and saw a bunch of Disney previews.  The newer ones look great.  Anything new that is in CGI looks excellent on BD.  Too bad 90% of Disney movies are crap that I wouldn't want to see in the first place.

Kill Bill 1&2 (great transfer)
The Dark Knight  (great transfer, even better movie)
The Terminator movies (the first two look upscaled, the third one looks good)
Jarhead
Wall-E looks great if that's your kind of movie

I'm sure there are others....

I'm holding out on Kill Bill for just a bit longer till Tarentino's next movie comes out. Something tells me Kill Bill will see a double dip that is a bit more feature packed. If it doesnt then that's a for sure pick up. I want Wall-E also I'm just hoping the price drops on it a tad more.

Aw there's one I will pick up soon. Jarhead. I just need to compare the Blu-ray($12) review to the HD-DVD($4) one then compare it further with the 2 disc dvd special edition to see if i'd miss any worthwhile features that may come out with a later hi-def addition...yeah I put a lot into my movie buying for some damn reason.

The Dark Knight I have. My only issue with that is that the IMAX scenes look amazing while the rest somewhat pales in comparison. Not saying that it looks bad, hell no, just those scenes make me hope Nolan follows up on his idea to do a film using only the IMAX cameras.

However I don't have Batman Begins on any hidef format. So I should really see whats the overall word is on that one (which I'm sure is more than positive).

Baraka is a lot better than Planet Earth as far as image and sound quality is concerned.  It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it is worth looking in to.   Unfortunately is comes in a gay cardboard box, like a SNES or N64 game.

QFT.

HD-DVD
The Chronicles of Riddick
Stardust
The Bourne Trilogy
Mission Impossible Trilogy
The Last Samurai

Blu-ray
The Hulk was conspicuously absent from your list!
Appleseed Ex Machina
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence

Honestly, most sci-fi looks amazing, but I think Riddick is reference material.  Plus the new game is coming soon, so it's pretty much a must buy!

As far as Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell, you'd probably want to check out the first movies in those sets before you invest in the second, as they only have the sequels on Blu-ray.

And, am I the only person who liked Stardust?!   That movie is AWESOME!
