What is preferred in video games is subjective and Shenmue
was a commercial flop.

So I'm giving an experienced subjective view.

My household comprises of an avid PC FPS gamer, PSP gamer
and me an XBOX 360 and Dreamcast owner.

Some people automatically think old stuff is crap without
proper criticism.

I would like to say of Shenmue that it the best game I have
ever played because I don't spend time killing, shooting or
hitting the opponents to death, a scenario which forms
99.9% of all rpgs.

Shenmue has original gameplay concepts that work and
have been copied if somewhat belatedly.  The game had
dialogue with ever character, diversity of gameplay
including full arcade games and pub games.  The story
was backed by an original music score and very good
art design.  The effect was like a novel that you were
excited to discover the next chapter because ultimately
you as player cared for the main character Ryo Hazuki.

I'm still waiting for a game as good as Shenmue to
be released on the 360, but until then I will
be enjoying Shenmue II again on my Dreamcast
this Christmas.

Retrogamer, youre a dumbass. Dialogue with every character? You seriously think Shenmue was the first game to do that?

Shenmue, as has been said before, was nothing more than walking around talking to people, trying to find info about your father, with minigames strewn about. If thats your definition of a captivating story you should stop watching Anime and start reading a few novels.

No one gives 2-shits about shenmue except Sega fanboys. And bad news, Sega died after JSRF and Panzer Dragoon Orta.

As far as I knew, yes, when it came to voiced dialogue (which I think he meant). Every NPC, and there were a lot of them, had his/her own voice, background and quite a few lines in Shenmue which I hadn't seen before. And not just around five different voices then for all the NPC's (see Oblivion). Which other games did this before? Or after? I have no idea.

I retract my statement. You should be able to close certain users off to certain threads.
