What would you rank as your top 5 or 10 horror films?

Im finding some older horror films from my youth are more comedic now...so I was wondering if you know of any films that are truly scary...or if none at all just playing sickening and gory...

Its really hard to define horror movies really. Todays " horror" movies are really just suspenseful. They' re not really scary they just try to surprise you. Other " horror" movies from today are just gory like the Saw movies. As far as old horror movies, I liked the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, but I always thought they were somewhat comical

Quality thread Mass, I love my horror movies. Here' s my top ten in no real order.

1. The Descent - British flick which in the cinema was amazing. If you haven' t seen it and you like horror, it' s a must.

2. Ichi The Killer - Japanese ultraviolentsexualgorefest. Spectactular. And the scene with the deep fried shrimp

3. American Werewolf in London - It just rules. I popped my cherry with a girl watching this.

4. Alien - I think it' s the scariest film ever made.

5. The Howling - The original is a classic. Don' t bother with any of the sequels, especially the one with the were-kangaroo nuns.

6. Pan' s Labyrinth - Not sure if it' s truly a horror, but it' s undoubtedly Del Torro' s finest film and deservedly won 5 million Oscars.

7. The Shining - Did I say Alien was the scariest film ever? Heeeeere' s JOHNNY!!

8. Hellraiser - Clive Barker at his best. The sequels elaborate on the story behind the Cenobites, but rely too much on gore and special effects. I don' t know how many time' s I' ve watched this now....

9. Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Just because so many films want to be this film.

10. The Evil Dead 2 - Basically a comedy remake of the first one, it' s the funniest horror ever made. Only Brain Dead comes close.

I could go on and on - I missed out some classic movies (The original Night of the Living Dead), Cannibal Holocaust, Lost Boys, Eraserhead, Naked Lunch etc

I' ll also recommend some excellent horrors you may have missed - Nightwatch, a Russian movie (part of trilogy but I' m waiting for the next two!), Deathwatch, a WW1 horror set in the trenches, Devil' s Rejects (slasher) and Bride and Seed of Chucky - very funny Child' s Play movies. Some people hate the last two, but I love camp horror, so these and the Toxic Avenger movies are right up my street.

Masta said it right when he said horror movies are hard to define. I personally don' t consider a movie a horror unless it' s scary. Camp isn' t scary. Gore isn' t scary. Keeping that in mind:

1.Poltergeist : I still get nervous looking under my bed. Fucking clown

2.The Ring : maybe it was because I lived alone when I saw this one. I just know that when I got home I actually hestitated for a bit before I turned on my tv.

3.Hellraiser : Pinhead>all other horror movie killers.

4.Alien : didn' t really scare me, but still, that' s a freaky ass movie.

5. Creepshow: I know, I know. They' re campy as hell. But there' s a story in one of them ( i forget which one) about a guy in a office who gets eaten by cockroaches. I think about the scene where the roaches crawl out of his mouth everytime i see one of the little buggers.

I don' t really care much for horror movies mainly because they don' t have much effect on me. If they can' t scare you they rarely have other advantages over other type of movies. I won' t try to rank any but I do have a few that I enjoyed.

The Devils Rejects
An excellent horror movie. It uses less cheap surprise scares and more suspense and twisted fucked up shit to prevent you from sleeping right. Besides that, it' s an all around great movie.

The Alien movies kickass if you consider them to be horror movies. If you don' t consider them to be horror movies they still kickass.

Evil Dead movies, awesome. I think it was the second one I watched when i was 16ish with some friends that I really enjoyed. We were all high and drinking. The part where the woman gets raped by the tree had me choking on my own beer.

I rarely watch horror movies because they all seem so retarded. Only one I' ve seen the past five years is The Blairwitch Project which was kind of scary even though I laughed more than I was scared

Whilst none are particularly scary... I' d say my favourite horror film is the Exorcist.

Yea I would have to admit that the Halloween Movies are my all time favorite customer Mikey just cant be beat. But if you watch the New Halloween move in my opinion it is not as good due the fact that they change the Whole plot of the storie from the first halloween Movie ever made. I mean yeah some of the things in the movie are still the same and it does have a lot more blood and gore, but it lacked the old micheal that never ran. I mean dont get me wrong Rob Zombie is a great producer and director but he tackled more that he could hold down.

Also I do like the Night of the living dead movies they were all great. I also Enjoyed the first friday the 13th movie the rest were ok but not as good as the first one. Nightmare on Elm street movies were pretty great also I didnt much like the one where there in the mental ward I think it was like part 3.

Aliens was a good movie but it wasn' t really a horror film to me, Seemed to be for a action packed shooter. I mean if its the case where we are talking about the aliens making the movie a horror flick then I think pitch black was a good movie too. If you have ever watch the phantasm movies then there is a good horror movie.

Anyways I' m new here so I dont want to blab on to much.

Just watched Ichi the Killer (not quite horror flick)...and wow that is the most fucked up movie that I have seen in quite some time...sado/masochistic sickness during almost all 130 minutes of it...I mean when the title is revealed thru ejaculants then shit you know you' re in for a fucked up ride..

In the remake he' s portrayed as a psychopath which is completely wrong. Myers isn' t deranged, he' s possessed...

It' s not a bad movie, but it' s got nothing on the original.

For me the story of Michael Myers stops at the end of the second film.

For me the ' Original' films are the best even though the quality is shite.

Texas chainsaw massacre
Driller killer
Henry-portrait of a serial killer
Poltergeist
A couple of scenes in close encounters to this day still make me jump.
Alien
