Halo 3 and bioshock isnt Next Gen! - Oct 11, 2007 15:42
Says some dude who hasnt made a great game since the Amiga!

Frontier boss talks about upcoming project

Frontier Developments boss David Braben believes BioShock and Halo 3 are not examples of " next-gen" games.

His comments came during an interview with our sister site, Eurogamer, about his new project, The Outsider, which he still believes will be one of the first proper examples of fifth generation gaming on the market.

" I loved the 1930s-1950s atmosphere of BioShock: the lovely Art Deco visuals and the audio that worked especially well," Braben said. " Overall the whole game was beautifully executed, but the gameplay itself was not ' next-gen' ."

" I found Halo 3 great fun, too, but also a little disappointing - as although there were a few nice touches and improved graphical fidelity, it hadn' t really moved on much from Halo 2 in terms of the gameplay.

" So to answer your question, if anything I am reassured; I think Outsider more than stands up to them, and I still think Outsider will be one of the first ' next-gen' games," he added.

The Outsider was announced back in 2005 as a game that would bring around the same sort of freedom as Braben' s other famous creation, Elite. For him, a next-gen game means giving you the tools to change the outcome of a story much more dynamically than by choosing good or evil paths - something only the new consoles have the grunt to deliver.

No platforms or release dates have yet been announced

I just love when guys like this come out and talk crap! I think generally people should wait til they have something cool released before starting stuff like this!

I don' t have Halo 3 nor care about Halo 3 much, but I think the fact that you can take snapshots and record movies is " next-gen" right there. That is an awesome feature.

In all fairness, Additional Software or not, thats another PC-gaming feature thats been around for donkeys years and only just brought to consoles.

Additional software that causes framerate slowdowns, so unless your comp can run the game at very high framerates before you start recording, it' s far from ideal, not to mention the video is very large before it is compressed. Any PC game with its own system like Halo 3 would be far better off than making users come up with their own solutions like using FRAPS.

People been recording and taking screenshots from of Quake matches for years now. Threewave was released about 7 years ago features a bult-in recorder that saves the source into a small files (like H3 does now) and did not affect the gameplay/framerate and can be played-back anyway you wanted.

H3 has implemented really good, but the idea is nothing new atall.

But it wasn' t built into the game like it was with Halo 3, that is the point. So what if you could go out and buy a program for your PC that allows you to record or take screenshots from any game, that has nothing to do with the game but with the program. With Halo 3, there is no need to go out and get Threewave or any like program to record or take screenshots.

The sence that you have to download add ons to a game that no game has had it in from the get go, well that does indeed make it something new.

Halo has something of the best implentations of any shooter, most of them simple, the melee attack is swift and easy to use.

throwing grenades is swift and easy to use.

Vehicle control is unsurpased in an FPS, Halflife 2 is close but not quite there.

People have been playing games for years now. It' s nothing new, so I think developers can just call it a day and stop making them. I mean, it' s been done before, right? This whole " game" thing.

Not many fps has suppoted it,most has req mods or extra installment, were in halo3 its built in and works for everyone from the start, and you can move the camera around,awesom-o!!!

Also this has bcome a community, since its so easy to upload videos and obs them in one game.

Yes I could do that in games like Starcraft/Wc3 before, but never change the camera like or letted someone play it as he wish and let me obs him show it.

Using FRAPs to record your game play is a bit different. It records what the screen sees. Halo 3 records control data. You can move your camera anywhere. You can' t do that in FRAPs. True, PC users can take stills, but getting 1:1 pics from a current generation console game is extremely new, and awesome.

You gotta keep in mind that everyone hates PC games as well. PCs are for video editing, graphics editing, sound editing, porn and e-mail. Consoles are for games. Now if you' ll excuse me I' m gonna go buy a rad AlIeNwArEz computer which glows in the dark in many different colors and has a racing stripe on the case.

Counter-strike souce and unreal tournament 2004 had recording built in when they came out, original counter-strike had it too. None of them had fancy interfaces for it though, you have to use console commands for it.
Of course most PC games have had a button to take a screen shot for a long time. No fancy online sharing integration or anything though.

I would say the online stuff with replays and screen-shots is pretty next gen.

And the gameplay in Bioshock does suck, but I would still consider it next-gen.

First of all. " Next gen" has started a year ago. Secondly it' s a generational thing (duh), it has nothing to do with quality. Wii is in the same generation as 360 and PS3.

Yeah Bioshock isn' t revolutionary but very few games are these days. Bioshock is however one of the finest games since RE4.
