720p vs. 1080i - Sep 05, 2006 02:45
Essentially I want to know which resolution, betwene 720p and 1080i looks better, either for gaming or in general. Also I would appreciate it if someone could explain the differences between the two.

:P

Teamxbox.com did a article about it.

Their conclusion was about what kind of TV you had, often a 1080p TV handle the 1080i better then 720p.

But look at their article they explain in like 3-5 pages, and they know a lot.

1080i is sharper but 720p is smoother. If i was to choose between the two for anything i' d go with 720p.

Too bad there are virtually no native 720p TVs out there. They all upscale the 720p to 768. GAY! Scaling reduces image quality, even if it is only a little bit. 1080i has more pixels per second thus more information is displayed.

Wait for good TVs to come out. So far most are this 768 bullshit. You don' t want one of those unless you like bullshit. So ask yourself... do you like bullshit?

So wait... if my TV has native 1080p, will it run 720p better than a 720p native tv? Also, will it run 1080i or 720p better? How about a 1080i native screen?

And could you please tell me where to look on teamxbox for the article? I felt sort of lost just going in without guidance.

Set it to 1080i. It is the same resolution as 1080p its just that it only draws half at a time. It will look much better 1080i on your set.

My rule of thumb is to always set your source to it' s MAXIMUM resolution! When I had my 360 on my Sony Wega, I set it to 1080i. Now that it' s hooked up to my projector, it' s set to 720p. End of story.

1080i on smaller screens for sure. Unless you have a large screen, (34 -36 inch plus) you won' t notice the difference that progressive scan has to offer, and you' ll get higher res with the 1080i,

So... the game will run smoother in progressive? Is that right? But more detail with 1080i right?

the game will have as much detail as it' s native resolution gives you

For instance 360 games are made in 720p resolution , so it' s best to get a 720p native display for them (not some 768 crap).

If you set your Xbox to 1080i - it will upscale 720p image to this resolution.

Same will be true for many PS3 games (if not most) - they will be upscalled to 1080p if you wish (and that' s a nice thing for 1080p TV owners)

768>720

Eliminates overscan problems.
1080 sources are downscaled less.
Better compatibility with PCs as 768p is a standard PC resolution.

If 720 was better they would just make all the TVs 720, its cheaper.

Xbox360 games aren' t all upscaled to 1080i, some of them have actual 1080i modes, the " standard" for the console is 720p but almost any new games will do 1080i as well.

Don' t listen to these fucktards they have no idea what theyre talking about, joe has an ancient CRT and gangsta doesnt even have an HDTV or an x360.

Evil man is an idiot. Scaling looks like his face. Avoid it at all costs.

Scaling is NOT the enemy! When something is " upscaled" it' s made to look better. When I went from a regular dvd player to one that upscaled, my picture became MUCH more improved! As long as your equipment is up to snuff, you should use the maximum resolution.

...joe has an ancient CRT...

Trust me, the picture on Joe' s " ancient" CRT kicks the ass of any LCD that you may own! You know that, Evil.
