Retailers have complained on the blu-ray not being able to run games/movies after a while.

It' s certainly possible that in an effort to cost reduce the new PS3 model they have, like Microsoft, used cheaper and less reliable components.

The 40GB model is only available in Europe so far right? It' ll be interesting to see it it turns into something substantial. I kinda doubt it, but then i also didn' t expect to be on my 4th 360 right now so...

I know the 40GB PS3 has been selling well in the UK so if it' s not an isolated problem we should be hearing about more people having difficulties soon enough.

A friend of mine got himself the 40gb model after going through 3 360' s.

But it just seems bad luck follows him anywhere cause it' s broken already. His PS3 just refuses to take his discs anymore.

Some of them surely will fail but 40% seems a bit high...would be even worse than the 360. If it does turn out that way then Sony just made another stupid move.

But I guess only time will tell so we' ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

They have 40gb ps3' s in Canada, and therefore I imagine they would have them in the US too. They are $399 CAD with spiderman 3 included up here, same in the states too as they have the " now starting at $399" comercials in the states too, and I don' t think that applies to their 60gb models.

Somewhere in the back of my mind was the small fear something like this would happen. I didn' t want to take a chance with the 40GB model. It' s not just " economic" but it' s a different manufacturer too.

There you are making me worry, and im goign to go pick up a 40gb unit today. Well there is always warranty, and 2 years worth of it. so i guess ill take my chance.

Nah,it wont probably happend to you,was just a store in Belgium who had that % failure rate apparently.

Im probably picking up my ps3 in mid 2008 with MGS4 or something.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) can categorically deny that there is a 40% failure rate on the newly release 40GB PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) as has been reported on a Dutch website. Having launched in October, the 40GB PS3 has encountered the same industry leading, very low failure rates, comparable to the low level failure rates of the 60GB PS3.

“We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PLAYSTATION 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story,” said David Reeves, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.”

Note: neither mine, nor any of my friends PS3' s (all 60GB) have ever frozen, nevermind crashed.

It took Microsoft over a year to admit that their 360 failure rates weren' t 3-5%, and closer to like 30-50% (Realistically all of them, but I' m talking statistics).

I' m not saying this is anything but rumor. I' ve seen the inside of the PS3 with my own eyes, & it' s amazingly-well designed. I' ve got no doubts as to it' s reliability, but I' ve found that with great regularity, the official statement should often be taken with a grain of salt, more so than certain rumors even.

Ps3 is fine, go buy it.

I have not had one issue with my ps3 Works like a charm. I just dont see the ps3 failing like the 360. I will tell you one thing ys the ps3 is built to last a couple of drops on its head.

The ps3 is built very well.

My daughter just knocked over my brand new ps3 while it was playing a blu ray movie. It didnt even flinch in the replay.

The PS3 and Wii are built like beasts. The 360 isn' t bad if you tell it who wears the pants in the relationship.
